Black Hills visitors - please use extreme caution and always pay attention to local conditions.

Know your surroundings and what dangers there are in new areas you are visiting. Rockerville is less than 6 miles from The Markque.

One of our Wildlife Biologist recently had a close encounter with a silent rattlesnake:

“I was just south of Rockerville, SD doing some raptor nest checks. I was approaching a nest and stopped to glass the nest with my binoculars when my coworker who was a few feet behind me said, ”there’s a snake.” I looked down to see what she was talking about and didn’t see anything. She then said, “it is right by your foot.” Still looking around I did not see or hear anything and jumped backward. I looked some more, and she pointed where I was standing. There was a rattlesnake coiled up. She said it was between my feet before I jumped. The snake’s tail was coiled under its body, and it remained motionless and silent the entire time we were around it. Needless to say my heart was beating out of my chest and I gave many thanks to her for warning me. I was fortunate for her situational awareness and was grateful she was looking down when I was looking up. This happened at approximately 0930 and perhaps the snake was still warming up but we can’t rely on a rattle to warn us from the dangers of rattlesnakes.”

In short, get to the hospital as soon as possible and call ahead. It takes about 30 minutes for the hospital to prepare the antivenin or antivenom for use.
