Meet Ian—

Also known as Doc Holiday’s doppelgänger, Wild Bill reincarnated, and young Sam Elliott’s twin. Ian has nearly two decades of livestock handling experience under his belt along with several years of horse training experience. He’s incredibly passionate about horsemanship and teaching others how to connect with horses. You can find him leading trail rides through the Black Hills, teaching private riding lessons, or maybe fly fishing in local rivers and lakes. Ian’s excited to create some amazing memories with you all here at High Country this summer 🌞

Having the Rainford family here for their bi-annual reunion has been a total blast ‼️Over 100 of them came from all over the country and they passed down the oldest known family picture on to the next generation! One of the main organizers Robin said our place was even better than Estes Park! That’s some stiff and beautiful competition, but we will definitely take that compliment!

🚧 Trail Closure Announcement 🚧

Due to unforeseen issues, the Mickelson Trail is closed from Minnekahta Junction to Edgemont. Crews from the Mickelson Trail office and surrounding parks are currently working in the area. With their efforts, the Trail will be open by Saturday morning June 15, 2024.

Deerfield Reservoir is a quick 15 minute drive up Deerfield RD! You can fish, hike, boat and swim in the summer! It is a gorgeous and clear lake! If you want to grab a bite or a drink you can visit the Gold Run Cafe at Mt. Meadow campground. Enjoy it!

Hill City’s Main ST is just a quick 5 minute drive from the ranch and the road there and back is truly beautiful! There’s a huge variety of shops, restaurants and even a train depot nearby 🚂

Below are just a few that we’ve been to personally and recommend! It’s not that we don’t recommend the other shops, just haven’t made it there yet in our short time in Hill City! As we experience them, we will surely be recommending more! Hill City is truly the ❤️of The Black Hills. It’s a wonderful community and we know you’ll enjoy it just as much as we do!

We are blessed to have Custer State Park nearby, but wait there’s more! We also are lucky enough to have Windcave National Park 45 minutes from the ranch. There’s Prairie Dogs, Pronghorns and Bison OH MY!
Plus ferrets, coyotes, elk, badgers and many species of birds and reptiles! There are incredible hiking trails.

Windcave is where the Lakota people tell of emerging onto the surface of the earth from underground. See more here https://www.nps.gov/wica/learn/historyculture/the-lakota-emergence-story.htm .

Better yet visit Windcave yourself. Please note: The elevator that allows people to travel down into the cave is being replaced and modernized so they will be offering only virtual tours of the cave this summer!
