While there are many names for rain in Hawaiian, ua is the most common. On Kīlauea we often experience ua ʻawa, or cool misty mountain rain. We also experience ua hoʻokina (continuous rain) for days at a time, or ua lanipili (torrential rain) for short periods. Some rains can average over one inch (2.5 cm) per hour!

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park encompasses many different climate zones in its 335,259 acres, and during winter months many of those areas are often rainy. But without rain, many native plant species like this new unfurling fern would not survive.

Kīlauea Visitor Center receives over 120 inches (305 cm) of rain per year, and temperatures during the winter can often get below 45°F (7°C). Be prepared!
A light rain jacket, some long pants and an umbrella can go a long way to make your visit much more enjoyable during this time of year.

“We have been charged by moose, and Grandma has unfortunately run across a skinny-dipper on the side of a lake in Yellowstone National Park. We’ve had beautiful epic moments like being trapped in a bison herd for four hours at Yellowstone, walking through the redwood trees, watching the sun rise over the Grand Canyon. We could go on and on.” ❤️❤️❤️

If you don’t like the view, change your lens.

‘Tis the busy season, and we are ready to welcome you to your park! Make your first stop the park website where you’ll find ranger tips on how to navigate the holiday crowds.

Arriving after 9 a.m.? Here's a tip: turn left for adventure!

When you enter the park, get in the left lane, and turn left at the entrance station to drive down the 19-mile Chain of Craters Road towards the park’s dramatic lava-covered coast. Stop at scenic overlooks along the way. Save the summit features for later in the day, after most visitors head out.

More great tips to de-stress your holiday visit are found here:

"On Nov. 11, 1929, Inter-Island Airways Ltd., the former alias of Hawaiian Airlines, carried its first ticketed guests aboard two amphibious Sikorsky-S38 aircraft flying from Honolulu’s John Rodgers Airport to Hilo Airport, with a stop at Ma‘alaea Airport on Maui. The flight inaugurated the Territory of Hawai‘i’s first air transport service, taking three hours and 15 minutes to complete (as opposed to 14 hours via steamship and two weeks via traditional voyaging canoe)." The kukui is Hawaiʻi’s state tree. Also known as a candlenut, it was used traditionally as a light source because of its high oil content. Due to its cultural uses, kukui is a symbol of light and hope. This symbolism is a big consideration when making lei using its nuts or leaves.

Join Ranger Keoni today at the visitor center for a demonstration on how to make kukui lei from 10 am to noon.

Additionally, kukui nut can be roasted and consumed. The use of kukui is not confined to Hawaiʻi. Ancient and modern uses are found in tropical areas around the world. Do you know of any cultures that use the candlenut?

Our absolute favorite!! Poke!

"Poke’s come a long way from its origins in pre-contact times, when ancient Hawaiians feasted on freshly caught fish massaged with sea salt, seaweed and crushed inamona or kukui nuts. Today poke shops are popping up from Los Angeles to Kansas City to New York. But what of poke in the Islands?"

Great to see Mick Kalber and the gang back in the air!

"Now that Kilauea has erupted nearly all the lava in her system, it may be Mauna Loa's turn. The USGS recently raised the alert level for Mauna Loa from normal to advisory. There is no immediate threat of an eruption, but magma is started to fill the storage chambers below the summit at a shallower depth. This activity is often a precursor to a possible eruption... which may be months, or even years away. Here's a primer overview of the world's largest volcano. Mahalo as always to Paradise Helicopters... you guys ROCK!!!"

Mahalo, Hilo Coffee Mill!

"It’s Aloha Tuesday and I’m sharing my morning read, as I sip my cuppa HCM.

Melanoma rates are increasing, and especially here in Hawaii, where the UV are stronger due to our tropical location. The sun is wonderful, yet we need to protect against the harmful side effects. So keep drinking coffee, and don’t forget the environmentally friendly sunscreen!!

Have a perky day! We are ready to roast and ship fresh roasted coffee to be delivered right to you. Just click on the Shop Now button to get to our website. We appreciate your support and look forward to serving you so on! "

The American Cancer Society estimates over 96,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer.
