What an amazing legacy and life! So many changes in a century. Take time to learn this history, this place, and this people.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of a revered figure in the Gullah community, Mother Ethel Green Rivers, an island matriarch. She was deeply cherished throughout our community and will always be fondly remembered for her numerous contributions to her family, church, and the island itself. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Rivers family and all those who had the privilege of knowing Mother Rivers, as she was affectionately called. At 104, she was believed to be the oldest native Islander.
Mother Rivers' legacy traces back to her birthplace in the historic Mitchelville, where her life journey began. She dedicated her entire life to raising her family and witnessed countless transformations on the island. She remained a steadfast pillar of our community, preserving the rich Gullah Geechee culture and traditions that are so dear to our hearts.
A beloved mother to 17 children and a cherished grandmother to 46, Mother Rivers held a unique position as one of the few islanders who remembered Hilton Head Island before it had private resorts, an airport, and a bridge to the mainland. Her memories and wisdom have been a precious link to our island's past, and her spirit will forever live on in our hearts.
