Fox prevention. Beach visitors may wonder what's happening when they see a nest that looks like this. This nest has already hatched and been inventoried. After the inventory we rebury any unhatched eggs and the empty egg shells...this will allow them to "go back to nature." But, when we know a pesky fox is nearby...we recover the nest with wire and a fox cage and mark it with lots of orange tape. It's hoped that the fox won't be able to dig these eggs up...but often they do and then we get calls from beach walkers telling us that there are eggs on the beach. We'd like to prevent this with the fox cage...but sometimes they still dig it up. We appreciate the calls and the concern.

More nests! We now have officially 75 nests. These nests were laid in July, but they were not found by our teams back then. Photo is of a false crawl on July 20. This is a record breaking year for us...the only year we had more nests than this was 2019 with 105 nests. Next highest were 1998 and 2013 with 73 nests.

Happy news today! We have nest #73. This was a false crawl on July 17. This mother turtle did such a good job of hiding it up in the vegetation, our morning rider didn't find it. Today a vacationer flagged down our rider when he found a baby turtle on the beach. Searching tracks they found the nest! Great news! Photo is of the lone hatchling as he/she headed toward the ocean.

Storm update. Our teams have been out since Friday morning evaluating the status of the sea turtle nests on our beach. The King tides, offshore hurricane Franklin and Tropical Storm Idalia combined for a difficult week. We lost at least 10 nests to wind, rain and high tides. There are still seven nests on the beach that are viable and we hope will have happy endings.

Current radar of Idalia - Tropical Storm effects are anticipated with 40 to 50 mph winds. The strongest winds are expected around midnight.

Coastal Flooding is occurring this evening along the NC coast. Here’s the view from Ocean Isle this evening. We have king tides this week, and Hurricane Idalia will only exacerbate the situation.
