Last night we were treated to an amazing evening sunset & bear viewing! It’s such a treat to be here when all is quiet. We only had to venture a short distance from our camp to find ourselves among upwards of 30 bears, many of them mothers with cubs. We were & are in our happy place!
Looking forward to introducing our incoming guests to these magical experiences!

Experiencing acceptance from the bears is truly remarkable, and it underscores the critical importance of a guide’s experience. Guides who have spent extensive time with the bears in these areas possess a deep understanding of their behavior, allowing them to assess each situation and determine the most appropriate actions—or inactions—to take. In this instance, remaining still and allowing the bear to choose her spot was precisely the right decision.
Every moment with wildlife is unique, and circumstances can shift rapidly. An experienced guide remains vigilant, always ready to adapt as the behavior of the bears and the dynamics of the environment change. This level of expertise ensures not only the safety of all involved but also a more enriching and respectful encounter with nature.

These sibling spring cubs will heavily depend on each other as they learn, grow, and explore their world. If they manage to beat the odds and survive their first year, they will likely remain closely bonded for several seasons as they transition from cubs to subadults. The lessons they learn from their mother, and from each other, will be crucial in preparing them for the complex and nuanced life of an adult Coastal Brown Bear.

It’s been an incredible June in Hallo Bay, AK! We’ve welcomed many guests on day trips to view the coastal brown bears in partnership with Beluga Air LLC! We also spent 2 weeks camping in partnership with Bassett's Bear Viewing in preparation for accepting guests for immersive
camping bear viewing trips at the salmon spawning grounds in August! So much more to come!

How many bears do you see???
A female watches a large male (out of frame) slowly pursue her as she grazes on sedge grasses. She is not receptive at this point and purposefully avoids him until he wanders off.
Mating season is beginning, and courtship can last up to several weeks. The soap opera will continue into the next episode 😉.😉.

It's a special joy to return to the same location from year to year and find familiar furry faces! On the 1st bear viewing trip of the season, I was thrilled to see a mother and cub I recognized from last year. Her cub has grown into a yearling and is sporting a new coat. Mostly gone is the natal collar, a white ring of fur common to spring cubs. We watched them for some time. They both playfully ran through the meadow at one point, the yearling bopping mom in the face and scampering ahead. Their bond appears strong. ☺️ - The more time I spend in the presence of these remarkable, intelligent beings, the more aware I feel of our interconnectedness...our kinship.

Cute Cub Alert! Contact / Beluga Air LLC to book your June adventure to Hallo Bay with us! Brown Bear cubs are born in the den over the winter. They are called spring cubs or COY (cubs of the year) during their first year. Their education primarily comes from their dedicated mothers and playful interactions, often with their siblings if they're fortunate enough to have any.
