2. Choose Zinc Oxide
3. Avoid OxyBenzone
4. Read the Label
5. (say it with me) DO AWAY WITH SPRAY!!
We are excited to introduce our new Program Manager, Melanie Seyler! Melanie joins us from the vast & rural expanses of Hawai'i Island's South Kona and Ka'ū districts. She brings several years worth of local experience as an interpretive guide to the table as well as a multi-disciplinary acumen that encompasses the fields of criminal justice, cultural anthropology, environmental sustainability, social justice, and human rights.
E komo mai, Melanie!
Mahalo nui loa to all our dads who are working hard in the visitor industry, and of course to those who are doing the same to bring their families out to visit us! We love and appreciate you!
These nēnē (Hawaiian geese) were named for their soft call. We can imagine they’re wishing you a Happy Father’s Day 😆. They are endemic to Hawaiʻi and are our state bird. They were nearly driven to extinction in 1952, when their population dropped to just 30 birds due to hunting by humans and introduced mongooses, pigs, and cats. Today their population has risen to about 2,500 geese state-wide, thanks to intensive conservation efforts and protections.
If you see nēnē, please don’t feed them, keep your distance, and use the zoom function on your camera or phone to get your “close-ups.”
Jeremiah of Kauaʻi Hiking Tours met these cuties near the Makauwahi Cave Reserve, where he has permission to guide private tours.
