It was an EPIC Labor Day weekend at Camp Run-a-Muk!

We had some happy campers to say the least, but they’ll be sore tomorrow. 😂

The staff at Camp Run-a-Muk rolled out the red carpet this weekend and welcomed the Longwood University Women’s Field Hockey Team. It was a fun-filled weekend with all sorts of water activities, good food, s’more’s, a campfire, and a movie on the lawn.

This is the place where memories are made. ❤️

The she-shed at camp got another improvement this past week. Old worn out boards and a crumbling frame were demolished and replaced by a sound structure and Trex decking. Even better - the Trex boards were FREE and leftover from another project. All we had to do was cut them to size. Every day is an adventure here at Camp Run-a-Muk!

Let the holiday season begin!

Today, staff at Camp Run-a-Muk participated in the Bedford parade in Town. Over 100 floats were registered with many other tractors, golf carts, jeeps, etc. in attendance. In a small town like ours, you were either IN the parade or AT the parade. Destination Bedford always has something going on, even outside of the summer lake season.

Before and after pictures of our “non-project holiday weekend.”

We painted, added new pvc trim, installed new shiny hardware and skirted the bottom with snazzy white lattice.

This she-shed would not be complete without our staple red barn stars.

The American flag shines proud, especially under the light. Thanks to longtime friend, Wendy Wilkinson and my hunky husband, Steve Scheffel for helping me tackle this long overdue “non-project.”

The final picture is the inspiration for the interior (another non-project”).

We are thrilled to host this adorable couple from Lexington, VA at Camp Run-a-Muk (BELOW DECK) this weekend as they celebrate their 3rd wedding anniversary!

Holy moley we’ve been busy and I feel like we say that a lot.

Within the past 30 days we have had 10 TONS of good clean dirt delivered (to work into our bare spots in the yard), and an entire DUMP TRUCK full of mulch dropped off (to makes things look beautiful). We’ve also moved about 6 tons of stone - by hand - to backfill the back of the garage. I’m loving having the tractor here now, but the back part of the garage is 100% manual labor due to the pitch of the structure.

We are almost ready to rest and relax and bring on summer. But first, we need to make it through this ginormous mulch pile!

First fire of the season! Good thing my fellow property manager, Steve Scheffel, covered all the wood yesterday before the downpour that morning.

This wood was dry as a bone and burned perfectly! Let 2023 rental season begin!

Whew! It was a 12 hour day here at Camp Run-a-Muk that started with a neighbor helping us move 10 ton of dirt to fill in some badly neglected bare spots in the yard. We decided that Poppa Scheffel needs his tractor STAT, so another neighbor is helping us haul ours home next Saturday. It’s been in storage since we moved here full-time nearly two years ago.

And of course that turned into raking all the dirt, seeding, laying straw, moving stones, painting a side table, making a trip to our camper to drop off some chairs, planting 2 tiered vertical planters, rearranging all the plants on the back porch (twice), driving around in the golf cart, organizing the shed and knocking out several loads of laundry. The hot tub felt amazing tonight!

We had a monumental day today at Camp Run-a-Muk! 18 yards of concrete found a new home here on the floor of what will be Poppa Scheffel’s long-awaited garage.

Some of our family is visiting this week, so everyone got to “mark their spot” on the floor. Steve Scheffel is a lefty and that’s why his “paw print” looks a little different.

Holy mackerel that's a LOT of stone! Camp Run-a-Muk got a little sprucing up this week when EIGHT TONS of stone were dropped off and our delivery guy said, "Have fun!" before pulling away.

Our team (and we are all on vacation this week) unloaded and placed every single stone shown below in its proper place.

There were a total of 8 folks working with stones while 2 others were busy digging out and then replanting some bushes. We all rotated with baby watching duty. Most of our help were kids aged 7-14. Our oldest helper was 53. All hands were on deck to assist with this project.

Total work time was about 3 hours and then it was lake time.

Rental season is officially underway here at Camp Run-a-Muk! New this season are fresh cut flowers from Little Otter Flower Farm! This particular farm works with people with autism to teach them soft skills they need to be workforce ready.

Adult guests will also receive complimentary wine glasses with a picture of Smith Mountain Lake on them along with our local winemakers summer best in a crisp, light, white wine. We love our guests and we love to shop and support our local growers and producers!

We've had one heck of a time right before rental season here at Camp Run-a-Muk!

We had no water at the house for nearly a week. After two well pumps, a replaced switch, a new breaker, and a fully trenched yard with new electrical from the well to the house, we are back in business! Guests will enjoy a hot shower and flushing toilets this summer. What. A. Week. 🤦🏼‍♀️
