Been busy sampling some scents from Mary for my next signature candle. It’s all about supporting our fabulous local Idyllwild artisans … and Mary is one of our finest. She’s committed to finding the perfect pine-centered scent. If you want your very own candle, you’ll just have to book one of my private guided history and tasting tours. 😍

Clarkia is a favorite native wildflower some commonly call “farewell to spring” (since it’s one of the last to bloom). I guess we can say farewell … I’d say it sure FEELS LIKE SUMMER! ❤️

The only animals who leave any traces in our forest are deplorable human mammals. LEAVE NO TRACE!!! (especially toxic batteries that leach into our soil and water) … and always carry an extra bag to pick up what our less desirables have left behind. We do not want our wildlife having a taste of that. 😫🤮

If any of you purchase Arrowhead branded water: SHAME ON YOU … just know you’re supporting the ongoing environmental, wildlife and habitat destruction of our beloved mountains … and contributing to the ongoing bottled water health crisis. NOT GOOD! Arrowhead is owned by Nestle BTW.

Activists urge California wildlife officials to crack down on Arrowhead bottled water operations in the San Bernardino Mountains, citing harm to wildlife.

Today I’m honoring a local site in Pine Cove that highlights a scientific advancement our beloved mountain has offered fallen scientists like Dr. Albert Michelson. Born December 19, 1852 in Strelno, Prussia [now Strzelno, Poland], Dr. Michelson was a German-born American physicist who established the speed of light as a fundamental constant and pursued other spectroscopic and metrological investigations here in California at the turn of the century. He conducted this experiment atop Pine Cove in 1926, but with the Industrial Revolution well underway, smoke and pollution prohibited him from properly conducting the light experiment projecting to Mount Wilson 80+ miles Northwest. Dr. Michelson died a few years later on May 9, 1931 in Pasadena, California.

“Thousands of tired, nerve shaken, over civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful, not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.” - John Muir

It’s a little hard to miss our native California lilac (ceanothus) as you’re driving around the San Jacintos. The blue is too captivating to miss … and have you ever taken a whiff of these beauties? I think I like them even better than our popular non-native lilacs! ❤️ Will you be joining us at the nature center today and tomorrow 9-3 for a gander at dozens of other wildflowers that you may have never noticed?

California lilacs (and Alpenglow’s lilacs) … all pretty darn spectacular now. I hope to see you all at the wildflower show this weekend.

Don't be blue, the Wildflower Show is this weekend! Which is the most beautiful shade of blue, that buleblossom ceanothus or the sky over San Jacinto? Let's see those votes.

Can’t wait for the wildflower show this weekend. If you like nature and flowers and have a little spare time, please consider helping us gather wildflowers. Volunteers will be trained on Thursday and will gather wildflowers throughout the San Jacinto Mountains on Friday and Saturday morning, just in time for showcase over the weekend. ❤️

Continuing our wildflower week show case, leading up to Wildflower Show . I give you a real prickly personality. The prickly poppy! These thorny individuals grow in the low land areas at the base of San Jacinto mountain.

Yesterday, I took a moment to bow to Her Majesty “The Council Tree.” As I crossed the bridge to approach to the research labs at the James Reserve, I had to stop the Subaru and roll down the window just to gaze at this fine specimen. It’s the oldest living Ponderosa Pine in all of So Cal. This is where Harry James had his “Council Meetings” during the heyday of the Trailfinder School for the Boys. What an adventure those days must have been! ❤️

What a wonderful morning spent with Dr. Ghee at the legendary James Reserve, the first of 41 University of California reserves dedicated to research and teaching. This secluded location high in the San Jacintos was one of the first stops of the Cahuilla tribe. It is home to the OLDEST Ponderosa pine in Southern California nicknamed the “Council Tree.” This is where Harry James hosted “The Trailfinders School for the Boys” … and what a fascinating history that is!

The Cahuilla were masters at ecological equilibrium enabling their native lands to thrive (and tribes to survive even during past periods of extreme drought). I dusted off this masterpiece to read again.
