A good friend reached out recently with one heck of a proposal. He’s going down to South America on a fly fishing adventure for Golden Dorado, and came to me for some heavy hitter streamers! I’m honored that he trusted me with his fly choices & can’t wait to see what they do!

30.25” & 16” of girth. Caught out of my new RVR 119!
The fly is a cool story. It was a last minute fly that I tied using a Grade A tail from , as well as a tail from a doe I had harvested last winter. A beautiful 6.5” Hidden Bulkhead in “Shad” sporting some Jungle C**k eyes from & hackle from .
This fly was tied & then caught an awesome trophy fish all within about 14 hours!

9.5” Sucker flavored Reverse BulkHead sitting on a big ol’ 6/0 Ahrex TP610. This monster will hopefully be hanging out of the mouth of a Striper very soon!

Fun fact: the white Bucktail on the underside of the profile is from a doe that I shot during alternative methods season last winter. With the price of Bucktail the way it is, I’m going to be doing more tanning of deer hair.

Absolute mayhem. Numbers were good, average size was impressive, and gosh were these fish willing to bite! A jerk-strip followed by a sharp stop of the rod will make a swimming fly (think MY deceivers or game changers) stall out and get kicked around by the current. This was the play, and man did it pay off.
A big shout out to Max for coming along and helping me scout some new(ish) water that I’m opening up for client trips very soon!

Return client Steve & his brother in law Mike joined me for a fantastic day of fishing. A little bit of rain had moved through the area and was keeping fish deeper than normal. As soon as we had that figured out, the fish started coming up and in the boat!
Later in the afternoon the sun came out for a little bit. That had bass returning to their 3-5’ deep “basketball boulders”. A bunny leech worked in between those rocks was all it took to have a killer afternoon bite.
Thanks for coming out fellas!! That was an awesome trip!

What an exciting day! Everything from topwater to dumbbell eye’ed flies, to swimming flies & even a custom tied jig were all catching fish consistently. I would say the best of all, were the super awesome fish masked flies that my client for the day Jeff was playing around with. His flies are beautiful and have an airbrushed head that is out of this world.

My client for the day was the great John Goad! John is a fellow member of Capital City Fly Fishers and is a great friend of mine! He’s easily the best fly rod panfish fishermen that I know, but wanted to get into some smallmouth for a day. Not only did we do that, but all kinds of different species (like that big Drum) were coming up to John’s “secret sauce” patterns as well as clousers.

One of my most effective methods of targeting Smallmouth is from a canoe. The ability to use a small trolling motor that can get you way up into hard to reach areas is worth every penny. The only thing better is being able to bring a client along for the adventure!!
Mike put in 110% all day and it paid off! Not a numbers day, but a quality day for sure! Great job Mike & thanks for coming out!!

So there I was…. Randomly working (my day job) in a tiny little Missouri town hours away from home. Who do I run into you might ask?! None other than Brian Wise of Fly fishing the Ozarks!We traded some flies & I ended up with his Knuckle Deep, as well as a variation prototype. How awesome is that?!

I’ve been a fan of Brian’s YouTube channel for well over a decade and have learned a ton from him. Go check his content out and learn the ropes on streamer tying from the master himself!

Most likely an atlatl point. I’m blanking on what these are called exactly but they’re between 2000-6000 years old. (The only thing I seem to remember from my research on the last one of these I found on this river). Oliver stepped right over it but dad has a keen eye for antique broadheads 😉

Would you believe me if I told you she ate a Clouser tied with the cheapest of cheap synthetic materials off of Ali Express? If you don’t factor in hook, thread, & eyes, you’re under 1 penny. The best part might be that it swims great & holds a perfect teardrop profile! Gotta love it!
I may try this on a bend back hook next & see if the hook with pe*****te through the material during a hook set. Some synthetics seem to have an issue with that.

Last Friday I had the pleasure of working with as well as MDC Outdoor Educator on fly fishing lessons for the public! These classes (so far) come around once a year and are very popular with over 80 on the wait list!!! Keep an eye out for the next sign up.

With high winds & cool water temps here on the northern edge of the Ozarks, the fishing wasn’t the greatest this past Saturday. Good friend nailed a decent brown right off the bat, but the rest of the day was a grind. Shout out to George B for bringing the clacks down!

After a cancellation the next day, I went up into one of my hidden gems and absolutely slaughtered them. Nothing crazy big, but numbers were impressive for this time of year.

I’ve been putting some time in on the RVR 119 this spring. What an amazing kayak!

The river bass fishing season is now under way! Fish in the creeks of the northern Ozarks are scattered. I’m finding some in 4” of water, while others won’t leave wintering holes just yet. Some are already moving into spawning positions.. Crazy.
The weather we’re going to have in the next few days will really get these fish moving!

I thought I’d take a few minutes and go over what’s been working for me this spring! I go over fly selection, lining suggestions, and touch on why we should leave bedding Smallmouth be during this time of year. To the untrained eye, beds can be hard to find, (especially in off color/deeper water). If you realize you’re fishing one, get that fly out of there and recast!
