Today is a day of remembrance and prayer for Kalaupapa. On January 6, 1866, the first 12 people – nine men and three women – diagnosed with leprosy landed at Kalaupapa. They were sent away from their homes because of government policies related to the misunderstood disease.

They walked three miles to the Kalawao settlement, where they would live. According to “Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory,” by Anwei Law, they expected to find a doctor and medical treatment similar to the care they had received at Kalihi Hospital, but there was nothing in the way of treatment waiting for them.

The names listed in the Kalaupapa Admissions Register are: J.D. Kahauliko, J.N. Loe, Liilii, Puha, Kini, Lono, Waipio, Kainaina, Kaaumoana, Nahuina, Lakapu and Kepihe. (Please note that Nahuina’s name was misspelled).

They were the first of an estimated 8,000 people taken from their families and forcibly isolated, most of them never seeing their loved ones again.

Photo-of-the-Day from the Public Archives!

This week's theme is: Kalaupapa

Ref No.: PP-57-5-015
Back of the Photo: Kalawao Molokai - L***r Settlement neg # 2494. Presumably -- judging from position of fences 1 was the hospital where volunteer patients from Kalaupapa were received (and where leprous friends, standing outside, could visit them). 2 might have been research lab and administrative offices. 3 (2 story building) could have housed bachelor personnel. 4 the residences - Pharmacist Gibson with family and clerical servants in nearer house, Dr Brinkerhoff in farther one. Foreground - C.R. Bishop Home for Boys where Bro. Joseph Dutton worked. State Archives of Hawaii
Date: 1909-1911

Be sure to check back tomorrow for another amazing photo!

January is Kalaupapa month and the Kalaupapa Postcard Project is still ongoing! The patients at the Kalaupapa Care Home invited people from around the world to send them a postcard and they are tracking on a map the origins of these cards. So far they have received cards from across the Hawaiian Islands, from over a dozen states and from a small handful of states. Keep them coming! Here is a picture of the map.

Happy Birthday King Kalākaua! 👑

King Kalākaua, was born on Nov. 16, 1836, to Caesar Kapaʻakea and Ana Keohokalole.

His name means “Day (lā) of Battle (kaua)” and he was named for the canons firing from Punchbowl upon the signing of an unequal “treaty” between Capt. Edward Russell of the British Navy and King Kamehameha III.

Kalākaua was promised as hānai to High Chiefess Liliha, the widow of High Chief Boki. However, the premier, Kīnaʻu, disliked Liliha and directed that the boy should instead be given to High Chiefess Haʻaheo Kaniu.

Liliha prophesied, however, that “Ma o kēia keiki e ola ana nā iwi o nā kūpuna. Through this child will the bones of the ancestors live.”
