After much seismic activity over the last year, Pele has emerged and is putting on a show. Check it out!

The hour-long eruption that began west of Nāpau Crater on the night of September 15 has resumed this evening. Glow is visible from USGS we**ams and confirmed by USGS Volcanoes. The eruption area including Chain of Craters Road remains closed at this time.

Eruption may occur at any time….

Kīlauea is not currently erupting but...

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised the volcano alert level/aviation code from ADVISORY/YELLOW to WATCH/ORANGE earlier this morning. Park staff report rock falls, wispy plumes of volcanic gas and felt earthquakes.

IF YOU COME: be prepared for crowded parking lots, stay away from the crater's edge, stay on trail, and stay out of closed areas.

USGS Volcanoes shared this update earlier:

HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - Kīlauea summit is not erupting. Increased earthquake activity and ground deformation
Jan 31, 2024 14:41 UTC (4:41 AM HST)

Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. Increased earthquake activity and inflationary ground deformation at Kīlauea’s summit began occurring during the early morning hours of January 31, 2024, indicating movement of magma in the subsurface.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is raising the volcano alert level/aviation color code for Kīlauea from ADVISORY/YELLOW to WATCH/ORANGE due to this activity.

At this time, it is not possible to say with certainty if this activity will lead to an eruption; the activity may remain below ground. However, an eruption in Kīlauea’s summit region, within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and away from infrastructure, is one potential outcome. Patterns of earthquake activity and ground deformation are concentrated south of the caldera region. Any new eruptive activity could occur in or near Halemaʻumaʻu crater or the region south of Kīlauea caldera, within the closed area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

HVO is in constant communication with Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park as this situation evolves. The activity is confined entirely within the park.

HVO continues to closely monitor this activity. Should activity change significantly, a new Volcanic Activity Notice will be issued.
Hazards are present on Kīlauea and are described below. Residents and visitors should stay informed and follow County of Hawai‘i and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park guidelines.

A little extra seismic activity is always exciting!

Due to elevated seismic activity and inflation at the summit of Kīlauea volcano, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is temporarily closing specific trails, viewing areas, and parking lots until further notice. The affected areas include:

- Hilina Pali Road from Chain of Craters Road to Hilina Pali Overlook.
- Kulanaokuaiki Campground.
- Puʻupuaʻi parking lot, Puʻupuaʻi Overlook, and the trail that connects Puʻupuaʻi Overlook to Devastation Trail.
- Devastation parking lot and Devastation Trail.
- Keanakākoʻi Overlook and the paved trail from Chain of Craters Road.
- Crater Rim Trail from Chain of Craters Road to Keanakākoʻi Crater.
- Maunaiki Trail
- Kaʻū Desert Trail

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is closely monitoring Kīlauea in collaboration with our colleagues at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The park is open, but visitors should stay informed and prepared.

Visitors are encouraged to check the park website at www.nps.gov/hawaiivolcanoes for closure updates, safety alerts, air quality, and other information. This includes links to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory we**ams and eruption updates.

Kīlauea is not erupting, and the volcanic alert level remains at advisory, with the aviation color code remaining at yellow. U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientists will notify the park if conditions change.

What is the Orchid Greenhouse Sale?  This is our semi-annual sale of orchid plants. The inventory contains mature, blooming size plants currently "hanging out" in our greenhouse.  These plants are actively growing but are NOT currently in their blooming season producing buds.

August 15, Tuesday morning Kīlauea update. The volcano is not erupting, but...

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the summit area is exhibiting signs of unrest. During the past week, there were 467 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.2 or smaller, with a M-4.3 earthquake felt by many on the island Sunday, August 13.

Mauna Loa seismicity continues to diminish from a high reported on Friday of 8 quakes per hour down to around 2 quakes or fewer per hour, which is close to the pre-swarm background levels.
