A fun session for Coach Romell Witherspoon!

My stepmother, Jennie died last Thursday. I will always remember her as the daughter looking to find her family in 1981. Thirty-two years prior to this trip to China, her family gave her cash and told her to flee the newly in power Peoples Republic of China (Maoist China). She was about twelve years old.

Shortly after China opened to American tourists, Jennie went to find her family. We broke away from the orifical tour (with lots of official permissions) to travel to her home village. She somehow found a telephone number for a central place in her home village. Calling from Shanghai she asked for her father, and they replied he was at the movies. How they knew, I have no idea; however, holding on for a few minutes, she spoke with her father for the first time in 32 years.

Her village was about 100 KM West of Shanghai and authorities mandated two taxi drivers since it was a “long distance.” It took two days to get there, all on unpaved dirt and gravel roads.

Upon arrival in her village, people crushed around the car because they rarely see a civilian vehicle (once in two years about). Looking through the crowd, Jennie called out, “That’s him!” It indeed was her father.

Her family served one of their chickens to honor us for making such long journey and to celebrate the reunion. We ate chicken cooked on a wood-fired stove and sweet water on a wooden table above a dirt floor.

We spent several days in her village before we had to rejoin the tour. Jennie returned many times and met all her relatives, including her actual mother.
