This week I am sharing 5 Interesting Facts About the Hoover Dam you might not know….

5. High Scalers Fascinated Onlookers

One of the most exciting aspects of the Hoover Dam's construction was the work of the high scalers. These workers dangled from ropes and harnesses to remove loose rock from the canyon walls, ensuring the safety of the workers below. Their work was incredibly dangerous, and onlookers would often gather to watch them in action. Today, visitors who partake in a Hoover Dam tour can still see replicas of the high scalers' equipment and learn more about their work.

4. Made Out of A Lot of Concrete

The Hoover Dam is a massive structure, weighing in at over 6.6 million tons. A significant portion of that weight is due to the sheer amount of concrete used in its construction. In fact, the dam contains enough concrete to build a two-lane highway from San Francisco to New York, a distance of over 3,000 miles!

3. Construction Challenges

The construction of the Hoover Dam was an engineering marvel that took place in extreme conditions. Workers began construction in 1931, during one of the hottest summers on record in the Southwest United States, with temperatures reaching over 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these challenging conditions, the construction of the dam was completed in just five years.

This week I am sharing 5 Interesting Facts About the Hoover Dam you might not know…

2. More Than Just Power

The Hoover Dam is famous for its hydroelectric power generation, but it also serves other essential functions. It provides water to over 20 million people in Nevada, Arizona, and California, supporting local communities and irrigating farmland. Additionally, the dam plays a crucial role in flood control, preventing devastating floods in the Colorado River Basin.

This week I am sharing 5 Interesting Facts About the Hoover Dam you might not know…

1. A Different Name

The Hoover Dam, as it is known today, was not the original name given to the structure. When construction began in 1931, it was called the Boulder Dam. However, in 1947, it was renamed the Hoover Dam in honor of President Herbert Hoover, who played a significant role in the dam's construction.

One of our stops on the Sedona tour will be to the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

Per their website : https://chapeloftheholycross.com/about-us

The Chapel was commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church.

After an attempt to do so in Budapest, Hungary (with the help of Lloyd Wright, son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) was aborted due to the outbreak of World War II, she decided to build the church in her native region.

Richard Hein was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect August K. Strotz, both from the firm of Anshen & Allen.

The chapel is built on Coconino National Forest land; the late Senator Barry Goldwater assisted Staude in obtaining a special-use permit.

The construction supervisor was Fred Courkos, who built the chapel in 18 months at a cost of US$300,000.

The chapel was completed in 1956.

If you are looking to beat the heat this summer join us on our tour to the Grand Canyon National Park.

When they left Laughlin the high was going to be 117 degrees and at the peek of the day it was an amazing 82 degrees on the top of the canyon and then on their drink back a rain storm came in and cooled it down to 60 degrees.

Can’t beat that! Besides the weather, the view is to gorgeous for words.

Sneak peek of a new tour coming available next week! Anyone know where this is 😍

Oatman, AZ has an annual egg fry!

From what I understand, you compete to cook your egg the fastest using the summer sun, heat and other gadgets like foil or a magnifying glass.

Our driver was able to participate while on one of the tours last week! 👏🏼

Who else would partake in a challenge like this?? 😆 🍳 👏🏼
