Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming.

The first U.S. national monument, established in 1906 in northeastern Wyoming, near the Belle Fourche River.

Whoa!

My most memorable moment living in the Black Hills was last January when I came to my back door and saw a Mountain Lion being chased by my Australian Shepherd, Jackson.

By the time my brain registered what I was seeing, the Lion was 30’ up a pine tree and Jackson was at the base barking proudly at his accomplishment.

I anxiously ran outside and shouted for my dog to come inside.

Once I knew all my animals were safe, I quickly mounted my 70-200 lens to capture this rare opportunity.

As I walked outside, I made sure I had an escape route to safety and that my shoelaces were tied (kids, don’t try this at home!)

I snapped a few pictures as the Mountain Lion stared angrily back.

We had a little conversation and hopefully an understanding that I’d leave him alone if he left my animals alone. I respect that I live in his forest, but I also will protect my fur babies.😉

On this day in 1882, James Leighton Gilmore died by public ex*****on in Deadwood.

"James Leighton Gilmore (July 1858 - December 15, 1882) was the first public ex*****on in Deadwood and the second legal ex*****on in Dakota Territory. In 1879, Gilmore killed Bicente Ortez along the Ft. Pierre to Deadwood Trail. After the shooting, Gilmore fled to Nebraska and opened a dance hall. In 1881, he was accused of being an accomplice in a homicide at the dance hall. He fled but was captured in Pierre, Dakota Territory, before being transported to Deadwood where he awaited trial. Gilmore was found guilty and was sentenced to death by hanging. On December 15, 1882, he was publicly executed in the courtyard of Deadwood's first county jail. In 2006, the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission, through the Cemetery Headstone Grant program, placed a granite monument on Gilmore's previously unmarked grave."
