The radKIDS program and DARE program is ran over several weeks during the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy, which is taught by certified radKIDS’ and DARE Instructor Officer Eric Mericle. The radKIDS training takes one week to complete which is approximately 10 hours of training. The ages for the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy is for 5 - 7 year olds in a morning session, and 8-9 year olds in an afternoon session. Registration for the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy takes place the first full week of April ( Mon. – Fri. ) each year by calling the Optimist Safety City between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Registering early in the registration process is recommended since limited class slots fill up quickly. After registering by phone, a confirmation form will be sent out along with other forms that parents will have to have completed and signed, and bring with them the first day of class. The Optimist Safety City also has spring field trips available during the school year for any pre-school or elementary school that wishes to take advantage of this opportunity. Selective components of the radKIDS Program is presented during the field trips, which includes riding bikes and going through a fire training smoke house. The Optimist Safety City also has selective radKIDS presentations that can be done at the schools in the City of Lima upon request, as well as the full radKIDS Program in those City of Lima schools that have the time it takes to complete the full program, and has the facilities available to conduct the extensive hands on training that’s required for the full radKIDS Program.

We have to give a huge thank you to Matthew Schum and Allison Fronzaglia. Matthew was looking for a project to earn his Eagle Scout. He heard about Safety City wanting a sign and offered to take on this as his project. Not only did he come up with an amazing sign but he also added flower boxes to help brighten up the front of Safety City. To say he out did himself was an under statement!
Allison Fronzaglia was told we were looking for someone to revitalize the classroom. She picked the colors and created the design all on her own. What she has done is a true work of art and we couldn’t be happier with it!!
Matthew and Allison thank you for all of your hard work here. We are incredibly proud of you and forever thankful for what you have done here at Safety City!
Thank you to the Lima Noon Optimist Club for allowing these projects to happen! Thank you to the FOP, Lima Lodge #21,and Lima FOPA Lodge #8 for the donations to see these projects become a reality!

The past three days we have had classes from Bluffton Elementary School come to Safety City for Field trips. The children learn about good and bad people, gun safety, and bicycle safety. Then they get to see the David L. Vastano Survive Alive house with Inspector Warren Pughsley from the Lima Fire Department! Inspector Warren teaches them how to be safe during fires, tornadoes, and storms. Once they are done, the children are able to ride bicycles around Safety City with Officer Eric Mericle. We have had so much fun with you all! We can’t wait to see you all again!!
