The Wyoming high country is spectacular! Love us some geography trivia 💛

Ask anyone on the street where the source of the Yellowstone River is, and they’ll probably tell you, “Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park.” Go ahead and ask anyone…we’ll wait…

But that’s incorrect.

While the Yellowstone River does flow into and out of the largest lake in the National Park, its source is at 12,156 feet along the side of Younts Peak, just outside the park’s border in Wyoming’s Absaroka Range, about 70 river miles (or 28 air miles) south of the spot it enters Yellowstone Lake. Harry Younts, for whom the peak was named, was the first ranger at Yellowstone National Park.

At 692 miles, the Yellowstone is the longest free-flowing river in the Lower 48. It all begins as melted ice and snow from a small glacier in a cirque on the north face of Younts Peak and flows into a small glacial lake. Two small rivulets (North and South Forks) leave the tiny tarn and move toward the National Park. The Hidatsa people had named the river “Meé,-ah’-zah,” which translates to stone river, and the Crow people knew it as the “E-chee-dick-karsh-ah-shay” or elk river.

The river leaves Yellowstone Lake at Fishing Bridge and flows north into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, over LeHardys Rapids, and through Hayden Valley. It crosses Montana and just inside the North Dakota border it joins the Missouri River not far from Fort Union Trading Post.
