ve learned that being the most profitable is better than being the best or the biggest. I was in the LTL freight business before and after the deregulation of the trucking industry. During those times of intense competition companies had a tendency to compete away profits by passing it on to customers in lower prices or dissipating it in higher costs of competing. The more rivalry is based on price, the more companies are competing to be the best or the biggest in an effort to secure market share without financial performance being the overriding goal. The results were and are still the same, the financially strong companies survive and the financially weak ones don't. The real point of competition is earning profits, not taking business away from your rivals. Target customers are mid-sized with an annual freight spend of $3 to 15 million.
