For those of you withdrawing funds from an International ATM, you are given an option to have the foreign bank do the conversion or not. I would always suggest DECLINE. The NO may take a few different forms to confuse you, but you should let your banking institution do the conversion, ALWAYS. In Europe I saved about $20 by not accepting the exchange rate the ATM was offering and just now in Auckland, the ATM exchange rate would have withdrawn $178 USD for $220 NZD. I declined and I looked at my checking account and by declining, my account was debited only $140.55. That's a savings of just over $37 USD.

One of my FAVORITE European hotels is rebranding and becoming a Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group property, expected to open in 2027. I had the pleasure of staying at this landmark in 1988, just prior to the fall of communism in Hungary. The bones of the structure were impeccable. Unfortunately almost four decades under a communist regime left the interior in a dismal state. Hopefully the Gellert, Budapest, Hungary will once again rise to its former glory. The most remarkable feature of the hotel is the Gellért-Bad. An masterpiece.
