Don’t have any set agenda or preconceived ideas. Just writedown what you get, even if the elements you catch seem disparate at first. You’ll be ableto use them in different ways as you move through the project.

09/24/2016

When arriving at your ruling idea, or log line, think about the personality and essence of your project, and what differentiates it from other similar expressions. Your project is about one thing, not nine million. Pretend you are distilling perfume.

What do you want to explore? I think it’s so cool that Woody Allen risks doing both comedy and drama. He is a genius, but he risks, man. Write about an approach you are interested in, that excites you, that you are serious about, and that you know is going to develop you and allow you to deal with aspects of your artistry you’ve not realized before. An approach that will ignite a dynamic relationship between you and your work.

You’ll know you’re in “inspiration is for amateurs” mode when a friend calls you and you respond, “Hello,” as if the caller just killed your whole family. Because every second counts and you don’t have
even a millisecond to talk, and your work better still be good, and no one gives a s**t if 1:00 is your worst hour to write or not -- you still have to deliver on time. Luckily, I made the deadline!

09/09/2016

Sometimes you just have to stop fussing with yourself. Accept some things about yourself and your nature and leave yourself alone about it. Adopt a motto about yourself like, “Who cares?” If you are a real working artist, you’ve got bigger fish to fry, believe me, than worrying about what’s wrong with you. If your work is getting done to capacity, you don’t need to sweat the rest -- it’s a waste of energy.

09/05/2016

The sensibility of the world of your project should become how you view and experience your life for the duration of the time you are working on it -- you can see the same black bird and it will resonate differently with you if you are working on Snow White or working
on The Exorcist or working on MacBeth. World, world, world. You must stay in the sensibility of your endeavor and be rock solid in it.

09/03/2016

You are not afraid to love, and you don’t have to apologize for this -- it’s a great quality about you. Shine bright, don’t ensmallen yourself. The universe is your source, not this one person. F**k this person; you’re here to work. What they do or don’t do is none of your business. Make sure your art is a big expression no matter the scale; find opulence even in minimalism. Be sparse and beautiful.

09/01/2016

Your work is making sure you can hold its next level, the way Picasso had to be strong enough to hold the Rose period, and then grow to hold the the Blue, then grow again to hold the Cubist. This is all work-related, and you have to see it that way, rather than get all caught up in the feeling and trying to escape it. The feeling will go away when you shift whatever needs to be shifted, the same way the glitch in your lower back will go away when you align your posture.

08/30/2016

The ability to be with your feelings is a muscle, like everything else. It takes practice to use it, and courage. No one wants to feel pain or fear, anger or jealousy, sadness orvulnerability, or resistance, or l oss. It seems counterintuitive to move closer to these emotions,
and requires great tenderness, patience and sensitivity, between you and you. For most people, this idea is already enough to make them want to throw up. But if you avoid feeling the dark, you won’t be able to feel the sweet, either.

08/28/2016

Expanding your container looks like saying yes to everything, then slowing down your breathing, really slowing down everything, like a martial artist -- like Bruce Lee -- and looking, with extreme focus and precision, at your schedule. Then, you dig deep and plug all the projects into your schedule, thinking carefully about when to do what. What would be most auspicious?

08/25/2016

You’re talented, and so you’ve probably reaped the ‘benefits’ of the fact that “talent is sexy.” But now your “talent is sexy” days are over, and you are deciding to get your work done for real -- not just funnel all your energy into helping other people build their careers. This shift means that you have to restructure your rings.

08/16/2016

In this assignment, do one free-write per day about World. A free-write is a stream-of-consciousness writing exercise. Set the timer on your iPhone for 15 minutes, and writethe whole time. You will reach a point where you feel a tired, draggy feeling, and it’s very important to push through this, because that’s where the most fertile and surprising information comes from -- not before!

08/12/2016

Remember how in the movie Elizabeth, with Cate Blanchett as the young queen, she had to learn the political landscape of what she was dealing with before she could succeed? Same with Michael Corleone in The Godfather. Same with us, as artists. We can’t just be oblivious of the politics of our surroundings and think it’s our only job to make art and “something will happen.” No one’s discovered in Schwab’s Drug Store anymore.

08/08/2016

Practice putting the words into your body. This is very important in order to viscerally house them, as opposed to just understand them intellectually which, no matter your medium, is the kiss of death. Get creative and take up space. It’s easy to move to “cold,” “lonely,” or “light,” but can you move to “abundant” or “breakable” or “fluttering?”
Occasionally you’ll hit a word that you can’t move to, for example “salty” (as in, the taste).

08/06/2016

Energy leaks are any projects you’ve started and abandoned, or any projects not done to their fullest potential because you were distracted, scared, lazy or disconnected emotionally or creatively from the material.

08/02/2016

Bring a little notebook with you, and set the intention to just feel the sensibility of the world of what you are working on. Don’t have any set agenda or preconceived ideas. Just write down what you get, even if the elements you catch seem disparate at first. You’ll be able
to use them in different ways as you move through the project.

07/30/2016

So you have to, now, you have to at all costs learn how to see. Even if you don’t like what you see, it’s okay, you’ll deal with it. And then you’ll get your work done. With grace, because you can see.

07/27/2016

I surround myself with the smartest people I can find, and lean into their wisdom. The alternative is not getting my work done. This is not fine. If you are new and first starting out, remember helpers do not necessarily have to be expensive. Don’t have friends as your official helpers; you need professional people who can see you with a clear and sober eye, and with detachment.

07/23/2016

Your work can no longer tolerate your old behaviors; it needs to
thrive. People besides just you need it, even if you don’t know them. Write a paragraph about a work of art that changed your life, that changed you forever. A film, an album, a painting, a performance, and you will see what I mean.

07/20/2016

Your work space is the externalized version of the “psychic house” that holds, gestates, channels, and births your work. It has to be right for you energetically, and have your vibe or stamp on it. Even if it’s a particular table at a particular coffee shop where you write in the mornings.

07/16/2016

I need a clean work space. It has to be cleaned, swept and dusted daily or I can’t work. Even the books. All the pens have to be black. The lamp shades have to be brown paper, and the light can’t be too bright. I have a couple of affirmations and reminders on notecards taped to my window like, “Don’t chase the boys around,” which is how I distract myself and avoid my work. Okay, you get the idea. Now, you go.

07/14/2016

My favorite painter, Chuck Close, said, “Inspiration is for amateurs,” and I love that quote so much! Sometimes, as artists, things come up where we don’t have the luxury of working during our “magic hours” or getting enough sleep, or feeling that “inspired feeling”
people mistake us for always having, and we mistake ourselves for always needing.

07/12/2016

My work space has to be womb-like, feel spacious, uncluttered and airy, even if it’s small. It has to be painted gray, no warm tones. It has black and white photography on the walls, my art books all around, candles, my fiber boards, incense, big lilies everywhere.
Open windows where the wind and rain can blow in, music, a little fridge with strong, bitter espresso, a bottle of sauvingnon blanc, almonds, olives, and some nice goat cheese.

07/10/2016

Here is an example of my vision. I got it, waiting in my car on a hot day with all the windows down, when nothing seemed to move. I had been through years of financial struggle and the accompanying perpetual anxiety, and I was sick of it. I needed my attention and energy for my work, and to know my basic needs were covered.

07/08/2016

As artists, we house the world of either a character, a film as a whole, a company of actors, a collection of paintings, etc. World is sensibility. It is the look and feel, tone and vibe. It has its own rules, its own psychology, its own way of moving and sounding. World has to be consistent, even if it has contrasting characteristics or qualities.

07/05/2016

When arriving at your ruling idea, or log line, think about the personality and essence of your project, and what differentiates it from other similar expressions. Your project is about one thing, not nine million. Pretend you are distilling perfume. What is the one dominant note that all the other notes arrange themselves around?

07/03/2016

Do you feel like you learned something and benefited, like your time was well invested? Or do you feel like you just had to teach someone everything you know about life, talking only about their problems and issues, and now you are drained -- your time was “spent?”

07/02/2016

Get creative and take up space. It’s easy to move to “cold,” “lonely,” or “light,” but can you move to “abundant” or “breakable” or “fluttering?” Occasionally you’ll hit a word that you can’t move to, for example “salty” (as in, the taste). In this case, discard the word and choose a new one.

06/24/2016

write down or draw any sensations, feelings, compositions, body
language, rhythms, behaviors, depth-of-field, etc. that you see, and apply these specifically to the project you are working on as you move through it daily.
