Support
We never take money/bribes from businesses to bring our tours to their doors. Many of the businesses in the Arts District are art destroyers these days, and we actively tell our clients to avoid them. But if you're a business that actually encourages, commissions or lets art thrive, you have our support and we'll send our guests your way. Thank you to House of Cocotte for preserving the Serch tribute and giving the rest of your walls to paint on. If you're in the Arts District, check them out. And if you're an art destroying business buffing murals and graff art and chasing off artists... G**o of the Arts District please.

Another awesome school group from getting taught the skills for making their own amazing art. If you have kids in school or you teach, get your students down to the Arts District to join us for a tour and painting workshop. They have so much fun, they don't even realize they are learning. And they'll think you're the coolest parent/teacher ever for giving them the opportunity.

02/11/2024

We are disappointed (but not surprised) by the rush to clean up and sanitize the amazing, spontaneous, staggering display of art which sprang up last week in Downtown LA Art the abandoned Oceanwide Plaza site. This was a world class artistic achievement involving daring, creativity and skill. And the city is rushing to erase it.

The Arts District is basically on life support. Where thousands of artists once lived and worked in 'Artist in Residence' code buildings (a building code created decades ago by city leaders that actually wanted art to thrive,) there are now cookie cutter organic juice bars and tech bros in generic apartments blocks. A new high rise is going up like an ugly blot on the skyline, created by the blatant graft and corruption of a city council that couldn't even police itself (the federal government had to take care of Jose Juizar.)

Street artists creating fantastic art with spray can, with steel, with yarn, are harassed endlessly by LA's "safety teams," pedaling around on bikes with their blue, red or yellow shirts. The city looks a blind eye as massive developers move in, and immediately erase historic murals and fanastic alleys filled with art. As long as the dollars are there, the art is quietly destroyed. And the city leaders let it happen over and over.

But artists don't go easy. What happened this week at Oceanwide Plaza - an abandoned skyscraper development that the city has long ignored- was truly incredibly. Inspiring. It put LA back on the art map. We cannot salute enough the artists who made it happen.

Art heroes all.

01/27/2024

He took bribes and payoffs to transform the Arts District from a place thousands of artists created in, thrived in and called home into a generic condo development with overpriced organic juice bars and bland tech firms. The high rise he took bribes for continues to be built, towering over the district.

The resident artists are almost all gone. The dozens of 'artist in residence' buildings that once dotted the District bought by out of town developers who are openly hostile to art and creativity. New businesses arrive who immediately scrub all art away. So much amazing creativity lost - replaced with relentless conformity. Generations of awesome art filled alleys scrubbed clean. Murals and street art replaced with bland store fronts and corporate logos. 100 year old brick buildings filled with artist residences replaced with cruise ship looking apartments stretching for blocks. It was a place where graffiti artists and loft artists and art cars and explosive performances and all manner of absurd and experimental creativity could share space...now almost gone.

Thanks Jose. Your legacy of destroying a district once brimming with creativity will continue as you waste away in prison. Your replacement has just as little regards for the arts as you did. I have my doubts any elected officials really care much about a thriving LA art scene when corporate conformity and giant developers wag dollar bills.

But the battle goes on. We love all you artists who soldier on, fighting the good fight, trying to keep the artistic fire alive in an Arts District being relentlessly assaulted by generic, corporate, big developer conformity and their corrupt political lap dogs. We salute all of you. And we remember all of you who were forced away by greed and conformity.
