Muddy Mondays with our Père David's Deer! 🦌

These little ones love to roll around in the mud to keep cool and bug-free. Did you know they're excellent swimmers and can even dive underwater to eat aquatic plants? They are also one of the rarest species of deer on the planet! You can meet the Père David’s deer, born early this summer, in our petting zoo! 🐢🐐🌿

Costa Rican Reticulated Glass Frog

The Costa Rican reticulated glass frog (Hyalinobatrachium valerioi) is a remarkable species native to the humid rainforests of Costa Rica. What makes this frog stand out is its semi-transparent skin, through which you can see its internal organs, including the heart and liver. This incredible feature not only serves as camouflage, blending the frog into the leaves it inhabits, but also gives researchers a fascinating view into its anatomy without dissection. The frogs are mostly active at night, when males call out to attract females and fiercely guard their eggs.

Our conservation efforts at Fragile Planet Safari Park focus on the breeding and protection of many delicate amphibian species, as they face pressures from habitat loss in their native Costa Rican environment. In our amphibian lab, you can see these frogs in action, especially during their unique breeding season. Males carefully tend to the eggs laid on the underside of leaves, ensuring they remain hydrated and protected from predators until they hatch. Join us on weekends for a closer look at this incredible species and our efforts to help preserve their populations.

Comment if you remember Fragile Planet when it was a hay/horse farm!

Did you know? Our 32 acre park used to be a hay farm! Our dedicated team has spent the last 3.5 years transforming this property into what you see today, but before that, the farm provided nutrient rich hay to RGV farmers. Bermuda grass is an incredible source for hay and for our animals to graze! Reasons this variety of grass is perfect for South Texas:

Warm-Season Grass: Bermuda grass thrives in warm climates and grows best in temperatures between 75°F and 95°F, making it ideal for regions with hot summers.
Drought-Resistant: It’s incredibly drought-tolerant, making it a reliable forage option for animals even in drier conditions. Its deep root system allows it to survive long periods of little rain.

Fast Growth: Bermuda grass is known for its rapid growth, which can quickly cover large areas and provide a lush pasture for grazing animals. It's also highly resilient to grazing pressure.

Nutritional Value: Bermuda grass is rich in nutrients when harvested at the right time, providing animals with a great source of fiber and energy. It’s especially valuable when cut early for hay.

W**d Control: Once established, Bermuda grass forms a dense turf that crowds out weeds, reducing the need for herbicides in pastures.
