Haven't posted in a while. Life happens, as we all know. We are getting ready for Thanksgiving next week. Does your family do a traditional Thanksgiving or something different? We do something different almost every year. This year is tacos, nachos and such.

A last minute cancelation meant an unplanned trip up for us. We were already out of town and only 2 hours away. Of course we still worked, well hubby did. Did some personal projects since we didn't plan this visit. I, however bought a few new things.

Made a special trip up to Beachs Bottom this weekend to get some things done in-between guests. New gas grill 👍
New deck and firepit chairs 👍
New storage ottoman 👍
We even put a new screen door on the porch.

Can you believe the month of June is almost over! Where has the time gone? If you haven't booked your getaway to Beachs Bottom yet, you better hurry. August and September have a few dates left. Fall is also a great time to go, but don't wait too long October is getting booked.

Black bears (Ursus americanus) are omnivores, meaning they eat a wide variety of both plants and animals. In Shenandoah, around 85% of a black bear's diet consists of plant material such as grasses, berries, fruits, and nuts, with the remaining 15% consisting mostly of insects, small animals, and carrion.

However, black bears are incredibly opportunistic and may look to humans for an easy meal. That’s why it’s especially important to ALWAYS secure your food and trash in bear country! Otherwise, it could lead to a bear becoming food-conditioned. Food-conditioned bears often have to be trapped and relocated. In some cases, these problem bears cause significant property damage and eventually have to be euthanized.

If a bear walks near your campsite or picnic site in search for food, will you be prepared? Here are some steps you can take to prevent a bear from getting a food reward.

🐻 Always keep your campsite or picnic area clean. It’s important not to allow trash to accumulate on the ground and only have out the food that you are actively using. Always keep your food within reach. If a bear approaches, promptly secure all food in a bear-proof storage locker or vehicle.

🐻 Make noise! Yelling, clapping, or if necessary, throwing rocks, may scare the bear away.

🐻 Stay in a group. Wave your hands over your head to appear bigger.

🐻 Do not run. Running may provoke the bear to give chase. Black bears can run 35 miles per hour!

🐻 And before you leave, ensure that all trash is thrown away in a bear-proof dumpster. Don’t leave any food scraps on the ground or in the fire pits as even the smallest food reward can cause bears to become food-conditioned.

It's fawn season! (Cue to "Awwwwws!")

White-tailed deer give birth between April and July, with the majority of fawns being born in June. Mother deer will leave their small fawns bedded down in tall grasses while they feed nearby, usually returning at dawn and dusk to feed their young and move them, as needed. They will not typically approach their fawns much during the day, in order to prevent leading predators to them and the fawns are well camouflaged with their spotted fur.
A fawn's best chance of survival is with their mother, so it is best to leave them alone, right where you may find them.

You can help support their survival! Always keep pets on a 6-foot leash and remember to stay 75 feet away from most wildlife, including deer (150 feet for bears). This will help prevent the fawn from being spooked and running from its safe hiding spot where it's mother will find them.
