Studio Member David Antonacci’s sculptures continue to impress! Ever hear of a “waster” slab? He made a thin slab to place under this handbuilt sculpture to absorb the stress and friction of the shrinkage during the firing process. This slab is placed under the piece during bisque and (more importantly) glaze firings. The waster slab often cracks, but the piece doesn’t. If it survives you can use it again, but it won’t undergo shrinkage with the piece the next time, so it’s better to make a new one each time. This is a crucial step for larger handbuilt pieces and especially when they span across two kiln shelves.
