Happy Sunday!
Thank you to all that followed along as I traveled in Eastern Europe. Another great trip in the books thanks to Viking River Cruises.

I can honestly say that Viking is a terrific way to explore Europe. You have one hotel room, three meals a day and an excursion in each stop. With only 190 people on the boat you get the chance to make new friends as well.

If you are interested in giving it a try, let me know!!!

July 13 - Budapest, Hungary.
Last day, on our own. Upon suggestion from our Viking guide, we decided to explore the Jewish Quarter.

We found Gozsdu Court, an alley way of restaurants, then made our way to the Dohany Street Synagogue. At the synagogue they have a lot of information on the war and the atrocities that happened to the Hungarian Jewish population not long before the end of the war.

A little souvenir shopping and then a break from the sun to get packed up. Ending the day with a wonderful river boat tour of all the buildings lit up.

July 11 - took the day off and relaxed on the boat and got packed up.

There is a great tour you can do on their website to see areas of the boat.

Our small, modern Viking Longships are elegantly designed for discovery and comfort. Each longship is identical and features all outside staterooms, serene Scandinavian spaces and light-filled public areas. To begin, select an area to explore from the menu on the right. July 10 - Vukovar & Osijek, Croatia
Todays tour took us to a small village between these towns for a visit to a private home. David & Valorie Kelemen welcomed us into their home with homemade cakes, mint water and elderflower water.
David stayed to try and protect his village and home during the Serbian invasion in the 90s but is was destroyed. The Croatian government helped everyone rebuild and they came back to raise their family.
Their home is a small farm where they raise geese, chickens & pigs and grow many fruits and vegetables for themselves and to sell.

After we had a short walk through Osijek to see the remains of their fortress and town square. Lovely small town.

July 9 - Belgrade, Serbia.
Today was a beautiful day. Our tour today took us on a 4.5 hour walk around the city to see the highlights.
This is where many of the younger generation come to live as the city has more to offer than smaller towns and villages.

I would visit here again.

July 8 - Donji Milanovac, Serbia. We disembarked the boat here for a bus ride to Lepenski Vir, an archeological site, then continued on to Golubac Fortress.

Lepenski Vir, located in Serbia, is an important archaeological site of the Mesolithic Iron Gates culture of the Balkans. The latest radiocarbon and AMS data suggests that the chronology of Lepenski Vir spans between 9500/7200–6000 BC.

Golubac Fortress is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. Yet the advent of modern technology has submerged some of the outer walls of this storied Serbian fortification, finally causing the decay of a powerful compound that survived years of war and battle.

July 8 - this morning we entered the Iron Gate Gorge via a dam and lock that was built in 1960. This dam raised the river level 130 feet displacing many towns and villages.

July 7 - Vidin, Bulgaria.

Today we took. Bus ride from Vidin to the town of Belogradchik to see the Beligradchick Rocks.

The Belogradchik Rocks are a group of strangely shaped sandstone and conglomerate rock formations located on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains in northwest Bulgaria. The rocks vary in color from primarily red to yellow; some of the rocks reach up to 200 m in height. The rock formations were built into a fortress with some walls still remaining.

This afternoon was spent relaxing with a stroll along the pedestrian area. Unfortunately not much for shops but a nice area to stroll and a nice waterfront park.

July 6 - Rousse, Bulgaria. Last night we had a long sail, we went across the river🤣

Today we bussed to Veliko Tarnovo to walk through a historic Turkish style home in the village of Arbanasi. Then a visit to an Orthodox Church in the village then a traditional Bulgarian lunch before heading to Veliko’s pedestrian area.

Along the way we passed a lot of corn and wheat fields, more sunflower fields

July 5 - Bucharest city tour with Viking and then transfer to boat.

Drive by Parliament.

Visited the Village Museum that has historic homesteads brought in and rebuilt to showcase life.

July 4 - today we moved from Brasov to Bucharest. Livue indulged Lisa’s passion for Wednesday and we stopped at Canta Cuzino, or tv show fans, Nevermore Academy.

Then the long drive drive to Snagov Monastery where Vlad the Impaler is rumored to be buried at this island sanctuary with a tiny, medieval-era church.

Final stop today is Bucharest where we enjoyed a drive past the main highlights of the city followed by a walk through old town. Then we said farewell to Livue, who made Lisa’s dream pilgrimage come true.

July 3 - Today’s visits: Rasnov Fortress, Bran Castle and tour of Brasov.

Rasnov fortress was built as part of a defence system for the Transylvanian villages exposed to outside invasions.

Bran Castle in Transylvania is famous for spawning the original vampire legend of Count Dracula. The castle's history dates back to the 14th century when it was built to protect Transylvania. Later, it acted as a customs point for entry into Wallachia. In 1920, Queen Marie received the fortress as a gift, who renovated it and turned it into this gorgeous castle.

Brașov is a city in the Transylvania region of Romania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. It's known for its medieval Saxon walls and bastions, the towering Gothic-style Black Church and lively cafes. Piaţa Sfatului (Council Square) in the cobbled old town is surrounded by colorful baroque buildings and is home to the Casa Sfatului, a former town hall turned local history museum.

July 2 - Arrival day in Bucharest, Romania.
Long two days of traveling: Madison to Minneapolis to Paris to Bucharest. We were tired but ready to go.

We contracted a private guide to pick us up at the airport, stopped at Targoviste Fortress - once the capital of the Wallachia region. Next stop was Pele’s Castle in Sinaia Transylvania. Summer residence of Romanian Ruler King Carol I.

Final stop and lodging for two days, Brasov.

Peru - we arrived in Lima Sunday night, left early Monday on a flight to Cusco and a nice drive into the Sacred Valley. We stopped at a local artisan shop to see Llama’s and Alpaca’s and to see how their wool is used. Next stop was an overlook into the valley and a shopping stop in Pisac. Late lunch at a beautiful ranch and dropped at our hotel for the night.
