We love watching the dolphins that hang out in the sound! Did you know that the Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research has identified over 800 dolphins in the Roanoke Sound and neighboring sounds? They are so much fun to watch!

On May 22, 1939, work began on Jennette’s Ocean Pier (Jennette's Pier) in Nags Head, the first fishing pier on the Outer Banks.

The 750-foot wooden structure was built by Elizabeth City’s Warren Jennette, Sr., who purchased the former site of Camp Weaver, a WPA transient camp that housed workers who built sand dunes in the area. Some buildings were converted into overnight accommodations for fishermen.

The pier opened for business that summer with a snack bar, bait stand, guest rooms and restrooms for the public. Located across from Sam and Omie’s restaurant and near Whalebone filling station, the pier helped establish the business district in South Nags Head.

Jennette’s Pier suffered damage from sea worms, nor’easters, hurricanes and even a wayward shipwreck, and was rebuilt a number of times. But it was Hurricane Isabel in 2003 that caused its final demise. A new 1,000-foot state-of-the-art green pier with educational exhibits, wind turbines and concrete pilings was built to replace the old pier.

The new pier, dedicated in May 2011 with Governor Beverly Perdue taking part in the opening celebration, is now a facility of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Guess who is coming to Manteo this Saturday? 🚤🌊

We have a special guest at the opening day of the Downtown Market this Saturday, May 11th. Harbor Towns Cruises will be having a Ribbon Cutting at the market at Noon!

Harbor Towns Cruises will be providing an immersive experience for people looking to experience and explore our beautiful coast and community. Beginning this year, their ferries will help people get from one place to another in a fun and easy way. Areas included in their ferry routes are Columbia, Edenton, Plymouth, Elizabeth City, Hertford, and YES MANTEO!

Come out and meet Harbor Towns Cruises this Saturday, May 11th at the Downtown Market opening day. The Downtown Market will be held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at George Washington Creef Park in downtown Manteo.

Happy Friday Harbor Towns friends! We have some general information for YOU about our upcoming launch! ☀️

⚓️ Launch date for the cruises to begin is May 1, 2024

⚓️ Pricing per person will start at $20 and vary depending on which harbor town you visit.

⚓️ The approximate time you will be able to explore a harbor town upon arrival is 2 1/2 hours. Again, this is subject to change per tour.

⚓️ Now that we have a launch date we are working diligently to create a schedule of tours that will be available on our website soon. We will share once it’s available.
