Historical Highlight Series: Packard Manor

Packard Manor was inspired by Winston Churchill’s country home “Chartwell” located in Kent England. William Doud Packard built this lakeside Tudor mansion in 1917. The design and architecture of Packard Manor were influenced by the grandeur of the era, incorporating luxurious and spacious elements. It was designed by the same firm that designed NYC’s Grand Central Terminal. Packard’s fear of fire provided the motivation to construct the Manor to be as fireproof as possible. Its walls are solid concrete, and each floor is 1 ½ feet thick. Today, Packard Manor stands as a testament to the legacy of the Packard family and their influence on the Chautauqua Institution, reflecting a period of American history marked by innovation and cultural enrichment. Historical Highlight Series: Boys and Girls Club

The Chautauqua Institution Boys and Girls Club is the oldest day camp in the nation. The Boys Club was founded in 1893 and the Girls Club in 1895. The two clubs decided to combine in 1922. “Club” provides a range of activities for children ages 6-15 years old. Historical Highlight Series: Chautauqua Lake

The name Chautauqua Lake is thought to be derived from an Indian word meaning “bag tied in the middle” which describes its shape. The 18,000-acre lake is divided into the upper lake (with depths up to 75 feet) and the lower basin (South). Chautauqua Lake sits 1,400 feet above sea level, stretches 18 miles and has an average width of 1.2 miles. Chautauqua Institution is located on the northern end of the lake with its 1.5-mile shoreline. If you are renting with ERA in Chautauqua, make sure to experience the lake!

Historical Highlight Series: Miller Bell Tower

The Miller Bell Tower was built in 1911 to honor Chautauqua’s co-founder Lewis Miller. This 69-foot Tuscan Villa style tower is supported by 100 feet deep piles. A total of 14 bells hang in the belfry, weighing over 6 tons. The largest, the Lewis Miller Bell, weighs 3,033 pounds. During the season the Westminster Chimes can be heard every 15 minutes from 8am to 10pm. If you are renting with ERA in Chautauqua, make sure to listen for the bells!

Historical Highlight Series: The Athenaeum Hotel

Constructed in 1881, this Grand Second Empire style hotel was one of the first commercial buildings in the world to have electricity! Over the years, it has hosted numerous distinguished speakers and performers. Notably, it even served as the Executive Mansion for President Bill Clinton while he prepared for his debate with Senator Bob Dole.
