There's something about a vintage wood table, especially when you find one in a vacation rental.

This wood table at Olive & Vine Guest House held my fresh fruit and fried eggs.

It held my car keys, hat, and gloves in between coming and going.

It was a gentle spot to sip a cup of coffee or slurp up a bowl of ramen.

It was where I charged my phone and took notes for my stories.

It was the soft surface that held my elbows when I needed a rest or a cry or a full-belly laugh.

It was the spot where I made plans for the day.

And this vintage wood table was right by the front door. I walked by it a hundred times. And it's where I said hello and final goodbyes to my local friends.

So if I was going to go on about anything during my trip and stay at Olive & Vine Guest House, it would be this beautiful vintage wood table.

Because given how much it held me during this life-affirming trip, moving forward, if a vacation rental doesn't have one, I don't want it. Period.

My best friend in the whole world lives in McMinnville, Oregon. That makes me bias toward McMinnville but, if I'm being honest, I'm really just bias toward Kate.

Kate has a way of making me, and everyone, feel so darn special.

She shared her favorite vineyards and farms. She took me to book stores and wine bars. She showed me her favorite spots for breakfast, lunch and dinner, down to precisely what to order. Now, that's a friend.

Up until my visit, we hadn't seen each other in 3 years, we hadn't cooked together in 5 years, and I don't remember the last time we spent quality solo time together.

And my favorite part of this trip were the drives just out of town to take in the scenery, watch the season change, and just talk about real life.

Or, you know, I drove and she swiped 'right' on the people she wanted me to date (or 'left' on the dates she wanted me to avoid). Now, that's true friendship.

McMinnville is one of the most beautiful places on the planet AND ALSO, if possible, get a best friend to show you around and pick your dates, okay? Because it adds a extra kind of magic to the experience, promise.

I live in New England most of the year, where when it's cold or snowy, unless your skiers, many locals stay inside.

But that's just not the case in Oregon. I mean, it snows there, it rains there, it hails there, and yet, Oregonians still go outside, like all the time, no matter the weather.

On one of my last days of my trip, it was pouring, and yet, so many of us still showed up for the olive oil tasting and makers market at in the Willamette Valley.

There were heat lamps and pizza and wine and so many locals in the best possible spirit.

It was delicious and also provided me with a good lesson:

There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. :)

I thought a lot about art in McMinnville, Oregon.

What is art? Is art something that comes from an artist? Do I need paint or poetry or prose to really be an artist?

McMinnville actually felt like a tiny city but also a canvas filled with all kinds of art.

From the mural on this building to the twinkly lights downtown...
From the hazelnuts and olives to the grapes that grow around town...
From the perfect latte to the pretty pastry ...

I saw examples of art everywhere and began to think of the locals as not just locals but also artists, or practitioners of creative arts.

This beautiful town is a canvas for the painter, twinkly light caretaker, farmer, barista, or baker (and everything in between) to cultivate their own kind of art and then, if they so choose, to offer it to the world.

Thank goodness they chose to offer it to the world because my visit was all the better for witnessing these very special artists.

But this mural is cute, too. :)

When I travel, I choose accommodations that feel like home, that feel supremely cozy. And I had the sense that I'd feel super cozy at Olive & Vine Guest House.

Here's how I knew the cozy factor was high:

#1, I could hang my clothes on hangers in an actual closet. O&V had closets and dressers! Gosh, I could even wash and dry my clothes in the master bedroom suite.

#2, I could walk from my door to somewhere lovely or delicious. O&V was just a stroll from downtown which made it easy to take my daily walk and get my coffee and pastry fix at .

#3, I could cook some or most of my meals. And, gosh, O&V had one of the best kitchens of any vacation rental.

Whether making pancakes, searing fish, baking cookies, or opening up a pack of instant ramen, I could do it all in this kitchen. And given the lovely light, I could photograph and share it too, which was super helpful to this storyteller.

This a bowl of instant ramen, amped up with green vegetables and a soft-boiled egg. Totally delicious, totally easy to make, and totally cozy. It's actually my go-to meal when traveling bc it almost always tastes good.

But, imho, it was especially good in this gorgeous kitchen.

After a little rain in McMinnville, I decided to drive toward the sea in search of sun. On the way, I wound through the beautiful Clatsop State Forest, lightly covered in fresh snow.

Once I reached Astoria, Oregon, the skies opened up. There were moments of dark clouds and fat rain droplets alongside bright sun rays that shown down from blue skies. It reminded me of the duality of everything, every one and every place.

Cloudy or sunny! Rainy or snowy! Every moment can hold opposing experiences. And never was it more evident than standing by the Astoria Column, from where I took this picture.

The is a structure in one of the most visited parks in Oregon. Whether you climb the column or stand at its base, there is no right or wrong way to do this park. The view is always stunning.

And like all of Oregon, the view is especially stunning when we witness all the weather -- like the rain falling on the grapes; or the snow falling in the mountains; or the clouds, wispy and thin or filled with moisture ; or the sun finding its way to the land in between.

I saw it all in Oregon, every bit of weather, and I don't wish for it to have gone any other way.

When I stay anywhere for an extended period of time, I search for touchstones: people or places that feel like home (besides Olive & Vine Guesthouse, of course!)

For me, that was Mac Market (because ☕) and more specifically Haley at Sustainable Rituals. Her sweet shop over in that trailer is "a safe place for people to come and learn about sustainability, with no judgement."

Haley not only had a huge smile on her face every time I drifted through her shop but she offered ideas and tips over the course of my stay - where to go, what to eat, and what to do.

Her goal is "to educate with kindness and compassion, and to always pass positivity along." And I'll always remember her for that and, as well, for sharing the best coffee shop in Astoria, Oregon.

Being a solo traveler has a few lonely moments but far less so when you have a touchstone like Haley. She made me feel welcomed each time I ventured to . Thanks, Haley!

I'm not gonna lie to you. It rained a lot while I was in Oregon. The rainy season had just begun so I was prepared, with layers and weather-proof hiking boots. And despite the rain, I ventured outside frequently!

Oh sure, there were moments when the sun presented itself and, gosh, you treasure those moments. In fact, one day, a friend and I visited Durant Vineyards at Red Ridge (a wine tasting room, olive mill & nursery in the Dundee Hills) while it was raining.

The rain didn't cramp our olive oil and wine time. We sipped and chatted and created some lovely new memories. And as soon as we drove down the mountain, the skies opened up to offer patches of blue sky and this perfect glimpse of sunshine.

I'm not sure how I captured it on camera but I welcomed it as a little blessing on our time together and how we were exactly where we were meant to be, then and always.

I'm not going to lie to you about this other thing, too: I bought A LOT of olive oil!

Sure, it was very good olive oil but/and/also I wanted to relive the memory over and over again once back home.

Contrary to what you may think (referring to my recent post on wine), I don't really drink alcohol.

I realize that sounds funny for someone who visited the Willamette Valley, a region known for hosting 250+ wineries. But, I mainly travel for experiences.

Sometimes that means experiences with food or wine but, more often, that means traveling to experience moments that stand out from a dream or a wish that surfaces within me.

And my soul most certainly called me to Oregon and quite directly to Olive & Vine Guesthouse.

One of the perks of the neighborhood is being so close to downtown and even closer to both Boho Yoga (their gentle yoga on Sunday was a kind of healing!) and The Conservatory Bar.

So when this non-drinker craved an experience at a local bar, I just walked around the corner to Conservatory Bar for an old favorite. The bartender made me a Margarita served straight-up in a coup with a salted rim. As my first drink in a while, it was worth the wait.

From my bar perch, I gabbed with the bartenders, watched first dates and old friends catch up, mingled with tourists and locals just getting off work, and experienced McMinnville a bit like a local myself.

I think that's why I chose this neighborhood, to experience life like a local. And after my drink, I practically skipped home feeling very much at home.

Years before I traveled to McMinnville, I had a dream that I was up on a mountaintop looking out toward a distant blue sea. I was certain that I'd find this place and perhaps settle down there.

During my stay at Olive & Vine Guesthouse, I kept feeling that I'd find this view somewhere in and around McMinnville. I drove everywhere hoping to catch a glimpse similar to my dream.

I even drove 2.5 hours up north to Astoria, Oregon (a seaside town made famous by the 1985 film "The Goonies" written by Steven Spielberg) and took the scenic way back home along the coast, taking a sharp left in Pacific City to wind my way back to McMinnville through bright green pastures.

I looked everywhere for the view from my dream. And it wasn't until I visited Fairsing Vineyard (planted high in Oregon’s Coast Range foothills) that I saw something akin to my dream.

Sipping wine while strolling through the vineyard's labyrinth, I tilted my head up to see the mountains all around me, all of them in various shades of deep blue. Squint and it could certainly look like the sea.

Now, I'm not sure if the vineyard is the place of (my) dreams but the wine certainly is. And after a few ounces of red, the mountains may certainly look like the sea to you, too. Either way, don't miss this spot.

While I generally ate breakfast in the Olive & Vine guest house kitchen, mainly because it was so well equipped (hello, baking drawers!?) and had such great light. My soft-boiled eggs never looked so good.

However, I did walk just a few blocks to downtown for breakfast a couple times and twice (yes, twice!), I had breakfast at Community Plate - a restaurant that has graced downtown McMinnville with all-day breakfast for 12 years.

My butternut squash sandwich was perfect, tender, savory and candy-like. Can more chefs please put squash in sandwiches, pretty please?!

However, the other star of this plate was the huge pile of greens. I've eaten from farms all over the world but greens in Oregon just hit different; they're sweet and crisp and taste like a spring garden (even in the fall). This pile was no exception.

Alas, say it ain't so, Joe, but served its last breakfast this month after serving this community with wholesome food for more than a decade.

Given this news, I was so glad to enjoy two breakfasts there. It's like my soul knew I needed to soak it all up before the end as well as return home with a desire to stick tender squash slices in all my dishes.

Hello there. It's me, Maggie.

After 7 years, I finally returned to McMinnville, Oregon, a place that holds sweet memories of hazelnut harvests, super fresh produce and downtown strolls filled with twinkly lights.

I arrived at Olive & Vine in total darkness after a 45-min drive from Portland Airport. And, gosh, when I woke in the morning, I was gifted with some sun light and this view of the guest house.

Vintage and modern at once, Olive & Vine had everything I needed for my arrival, including a hot bath in a clawfoot tub, local (decaf) coffee, and sourdough toast with marionberry jam - because mornings are just better with those things, right?

I wasn't sure what I would do on my first day, besides adjust to the time change, but friends whisked me away to Mac Market for more coffee (🙏) and we had an early chili dinner before I sunk into my bed back at the guest house.

Almost too at home in the silky sheets, I forgot where I was when I woke the next morning. But once I remembered that I was on the left coast (the best coast?!), all felt right with the world. I was exactly where I was meant to be.

Over this series of posts, I'll share stories and messages that helped me remember that this trip was perfectly orchestrated for my unfolding purpose and joy.

xo, Maggie
