This weekend, I was fortunate enough to watch my 7 year old daughter win her first medal in gymnastics. I observed her joy, happiness, determination and the sense of pride it gave to her! She wore the medal all weekend, swimming, playing in the bounce house at a classmates birthday party and even to bed!
This brought me back full circle to the first medal I won as a child!! While attending Knox College in the cool hills of Manchester, Jamaica, I was fortunate enough as a class 3 (11 to 13 years old) athlete to win the long jump, triple jump, high jump and placed 2nd in the 100M and 200M respectively for our annual sports day! As many may know, athletics and football are the predominate sports in Jamaica, with each school having their own internal competitions to select who represents the school at our world renown BOYS / GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS. By accumulating the most point out of all the other athletes, I was crowned the class 3 "CHAMPION BOY" , with the ensuing medal to follow.
This memory has been etched in my mind for many years, because, as my daughter proved to me this weekend, we are definitely of the same elk! You see, my medal didn't leaving my neck for almost a week! through showers, classes, meals, football practice, you name it, the "CHAMPION BOY" had to represent :-)
But mostly, I remembered that feeling of wanting more, prepared to work harder and hone my craft with greater determination. These principles led me to a career as a footballer and as they say, the rest is history!
Now, I'm not sure if this is the first medal this young netballer from the Caricom Netball Club in Ft Lauderdale has won!!! But I will tell you this!!! I RECOGNIZE THAT SMILE and it warms my heart to see what a small item can do to one's confidence and outlook on themselves!!!
