Wading bird Wednesday ~ A lone roseate spoonbill wading through the shallow waters of Big Cypress National Preserve. Did you know? These birds get their distinctive rosy plumage from the food they eat, primarily crustaceans, rich in carotenoid pigments. 💗

Creepin’ 🐊

Alligator eyes are equipped with a reflective layer (tapetum lucidium) that enhances their night vision by maximizing available light. An adaptation that allows them to be one of the top Everglades predators at dusk.

📸 Thank you to one of our guests, Ottavio Gianella, for capturing this wicked shot.

Bladderwort 🌼 A carnivorous, aquatic plant, that produces pretty little yellow blooms. It is prevalent throughout the freshwater marshlands of the Everglades, and uses tiny, vacuum like bladders to trap and consume small prey. Beyond its unique means of survival, for generations it has also been used medicinally to aid in urinary health.

Serving as natural water filtration systems, Cypress trees stand as guardians of the Everglades’ delicate ecosystem. They also provide an anchor point for native epiphytic plants to adhere their roots, such as orchids and airplants … both known for their resilience as they do not require soil to grow, but instead thrive by drawing nutrients from the air and rain in humid domes like this cypress swamp.

Today, 76 years ago, the government dedicated 1.5 million acres of precious protected land as Everglades National Park.

"Here are no lofty peaks seeking the sky, no mighty glaciers or rushing streams wearing away the uplifted land. Here is land, tranquil in its quiet beauty, serving not as the source of water, but as the last receiver of it. To its natural abundance we owe the spectacular plant and animal life that distinguishes this place from all others in our country."

- President Harry S Truman
