Travel & tourism account for 1 in 10 jobs worldwide. 🌎

I am that 1 out of 10. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Many people surely think that my job working in the travel business is to travel for free (I wish!). ✈️🛳🏖🕍⛩

In reality, 90% of my job is spent sitting at my desk designing itineraries for couples, families and clients from around the world. I spend hours, weeks, sometimes even months working on single trips, making sure every detail is thought out and planned. And truly I LOVE doing so!! 💕

The travel industry has been dealing with the coronavirus since January — an additional two full months before it really began impacting daily life in the Canada/US. 😢

Fun fact: travel advisors are paid after their clients actually travel. Many agents have been refunding their hard-earned money back to their clients by the thousands. They’ve spent these last four months working tirelessly to negotiate refunds, postponements, and cancellations. And most haven’t had new trips booked now for months.

But we do it without question because we have wonderful, personal relationships with our clients - something that credit card companies, Costco and online agencies like Expedia do not - and know travel will come back stronger than ever once this is all over.

**So when you do decide to travel again - PLEASE use a travel advisor. It doesn't matter who, or what company - we're all on the same team. But please use a live person. Do not click a “book” button on a website ever again.**

To my industry colleagues - you are warriors. Until we all travel again.

Off the beaten path ~ Paradise Cove Café -Malibu, California

Away from the traffic of Highway 1 and a scenic drive from downtown LA or the beach communities (closest is Santa Monica) away from the hustle and bustle of LA life is this post card perfect beach and café on the Pacific Ocean. Take a stroll along the beach to view stars and millionaires’ homes, perched on the cliffs above or sit in a beach chair and soak up the California sun. The food is amazing as well! Stay for an hour or stay the whole day!

The drive there takes you along the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) past beaches and beautiful homes. But be sure to take your time and don’t expect traffic to move fast. Another great stop along the drive is Gladstone’s an iconic busy hangout for tourists, bikers and locals. A nice pit stop for a snack or drink and ocean views. Its located where Sunset Blvd meet the ocean.

Make a day of it and make your way inland from the coast (or opposite direction from the city) along the Old Topanga Canyon Road (winding road with gorgeous scenery and ocean views) to the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas for some fresh produce and tacos. Or, maybe catch a live concert outside on the patio.

You could start your Malibu drive inland, perhaps after a visit to the Hollywood walk of Fame, or start from one of the beach communities along the PCH like Redondo Beach (smaller, more quaint) or the larger community of Santa Monica. LA is MORE than just the Hollywood tourist sites. But, those are seriously fun too!

Off the beaten path ~ Hunting Island State park and South Carolina’s Low Country. A short drive from Charleston, SC the low country area is a coastal region full of small town southern charm, history, ghost tales, movie scenes and some of the best beaches for nature lovers and adventurers. There are the BEST shell collecting opportunities, lighthouses to climb and nature walks through a maritime forest. Not to mention beachfront camp sites for you happy campers.
• Hunting Island light house (filming location in the Outer Banks series) is one of the few lighthouses that you can climb for breathtaking views of the coastline.
• Boneyard Beach is filled with tree skeletons that have been claimed by the salt water. Makes for awesome sunset pictures and fun to climb on. Rumor has it that some had to be removed for beach safety but a ranger led tour leads you back to them.
• Low tide beach walks and shell collecting … and I mean BIG shells!
• Nearby: Gay Fish Co. on St Helena island, along with Hunting Island and Fipp Island were all filming locations for Forrest Gump movie. You can visit the Gay Fish Co. for some fresh shrimp and seafood. They provided the shrimp in the movie and the boat Jenny is still on site (or was when I was there 7 years ago).
• Nearby: The ruins of a 1700’s church called Old Sheldon Church. History and Photographers dream.
• And for those Ghost hunter types visit The Chapel of Ease a historic site in Frogmore, on St Helena Island, for a historical, oddly beautiful and slightly unsettling experience.

Off the beaten path ~ Lanikai Beach, on the island of Oahu, is one of the best beaches in the world and is only a short drive from bustling Waikiki Beach! I frequented this beach often and at the time it was a local secret and therefore less crowded and felt secluded and exotic. It is found by parking in a pretty little neighborhood, near the town of Kailua, and walking down one of the beach paths between homes. The hip little town of Kailua has a walkable downtown with great food, shopping, shaved ice and a Maui Brewing Company. A great day or 1/2 day trip for a little taste of the island life ⛱🏄‍♀️🌸
