📚🌹 Celebrating Bloomsday: A Tribute to James Joyce's "Ulysses" 🇮🇪✨

Have you heard of Bloomsday? 🗓️ On June 16th each year, literature enthusiasts around the world celebrate this special day to honor the renowned novel "Ulysses" by James Joyce. 📖✒️ Let's take a quick dive into what Bloomsday is all about:

🌆 Bloomsday Origins: Bloomsday takes its name from the novel's protagonist, Leopold Bloom, and follows his journey through the streets of Dublin. It's a literary tribute to the vibrant and culturally rich city that inspired James Joyce's work.

🗓️ Celebrating in Dublin: Bloomsday is particularly significant in Dublin, where festivities and events bring the novel to life. Participants dress in period costumes, embark on guided tours, attend theatrical performances, engage in literary discussions, and savor traditional Irish breakfasts in homage to the characters and themes of "Ulysses."

🌍 A Global Celebration: Beyond Dublin, Bloomsday is celebrated worldwide by literature lovers and fans of James Joyce's work. People organize readings, discussions, and themed events to commemorate the novel's impact on literature and its exploration of the human condition.

📚 Why Bloomsday Matters: "Ulysses" is considered one of the greatest literary achievements of the 20th century. It revolutionized the form of the novel, employing stream-of-consciousness narrative and experimenting with language, symbolism, and structure. Bloomsday offers an opportunity to appreciate and engage with Joyce's masterful storytelling.

The history of bank holidays in Ireland dates back to the late 19th century, when the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 was introduced by the British government. The act provided for four annual bank holidays, including Good Friday and Christmas Day, which were recognized as public holidays across the United Kingdom.

As Ireland gained independence from Britain in 1922, the Bank Holidays Act was updated to reflect the new political landscape. The Irish Free State, as it was then known, adopted the act and added two more bank holidays to the calendar, St. Patrick’s Day and St. Stephen’s Day.

In the decades that followed, the Irish government continued to add bank holidays to the calendar in order to celebrate important national and cultural events. For example, Easter Monday and May Day were introduced as bank holidays in the 1950s.

However, it was not until the late 20th century that the number of bank holidays in Ireland really started to grow. This was due in part to the country’s growing prosperity, as well as the recognition of the need for more time off for workers.

Today, there are nine bank holidays in Ireland, including the original four from the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 and the five that were added in the decades that followed. These holidays are recognized throughout the country and provide important opportunities for workers to rest, relax, and spend time with family and friends.

In conclusion, the history of bank holidays in Ireland is a rich and fascinating one, reflecting the country’s cultural and political evolution over the last century and a half. From the original four bank holidays of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 to the nine we have today, these public holidays have played an important role in shaping the way that the Irish people work, rest, and celebrate.

Scotland could become the first ‘rewilded’ nation—what does that mean?

The Scottish Highlands native plant and fauna restoration movement is gathering momentum. Visitors can witness the project in operation at Alladale Wilderness Reserve, a former hunting estate in Sutherland, today welcomes visitors who come to take part
in rewilding initiatives, including as planting indigenous trees in the 23,000-acre property's Glen Mor valley.

Scotland was a really wild country during the end of the last ice age, where the Highland tiger, a distinctively banded wildcat, as well as wolves, lynxes, and bears, prowled through Caledonian pine forests. The north of the nation was known by the Romans as "The Great Wood of Caledon." But over time, people cleared the terrain to make room for agriculture, logging, and charcoal. Local fauna like elk, wild boar, and polecat are no longer present.

Now as new initiatives and a grid of wild lands and natural corridors are expanding across the nation, rewilding—basically, the restoring of ecosystems to their natural, uncultivated states—is enjoying a zeitgeist moment. If the responsible parties' plans pan out, Scotland will become the first rewilded country in the world. These rewilding organizations aim to inspire visitors by offering volunteer opportunities and all-encompassing overnight experiences.

Dún Laoghaire has been named Europe's "Great Town" of 2022 at the Urbanism Awards.

Run by the non-profit organisation the Academy of Urbanism, the awards are designed to recognise the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

In a statement, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said the suburb was chosen by the Urbanism Awards for its Coastal Mobility Cycle Route and Village public realm project, which connects urban villages, bathing places, walks and parks along the coast.

The coastal suburb of Dún Laoghaire is popular for strolls on the East Pier, and locally caught fish and chips. The National Maritime Museum of Ireland has nautical art and artefacts inside a 19th-century sailors’ church, while the harbour is a busy hub for fishing, water sports and cruises. Nearby Sandycove is home to the James Joyce Tower and Museum, as well as the sheltered beach and bathing spot at Forty Foot. Not to mention the incredible library and wonderful restaurants and cafes sprinkled throughout. This town is well worth a visit on your trip to Dublin.

It's that time of the year! Time to highlight a classic Scottish treat..

Scottish tablet fudge actually has a long and interesting history and was originally discovered in The Household Book of Lady Grisell Baillie (from the 1700's). The traditional recipe consisted of only sugar and cream, however it is now more frequently made with milk and butter instead of the cream to avoid the tendency of burning. It is often flavoured with vanilla and sometimes has nut pieces in it. Look for it at the next wedding you attend in Scotland!

It’s often present in hotels/B&B’s as a treat on the tea tray, and there are lots of variations to be found, like Tablet Ice-cream and Tablet Cheesecake.

Coddle dates back to the first Irish famine in the late 1700s when anything to hand got thrown into the pot. Reminiscent of a stew, Irish Coddle comprises hearty bacon and pork sausage, onions, and potatoes cooked together slowwwwwwly in a rich gravy until everything is tender and infused with savory flavor. It’s ideally served with some soda bread on the side or just by itself. It’s hearty, it’s easy to put together, and it’s delicious.

As we turn the corner from November into December, we recognize that the cold frosty winter is here to settle in so it’s time for some steaming hot soup to warm your soul. Why not a bowl of Dublin's finest Coddle?

What’s a coddle, you ask? It’s just the process of cooking something low and slow in a liquid that hasn’t quite reached the boiling point. If we’ve learned anything in the kitchen, it’s that cooking something low-and-slow always garners excellent results and that homey, rustic dishes satisfy the soul and the stomach. In a nutshell, we’re all about dishes like this Traditional Irish Coddle. Well known in inner city Dublin as a taste of home for the natives.

Dublin City, Ireland, is the quaint, charming, walkable city that visitors expect, and the corner pubs offer an Irish welcome. You’ll experience the ‘Old pint men’, with their old Irish wit, tongue-in-cheek jokes, and general good craic as you stroll from pub to pub.
Walk along the city's handsome Georgian squares as you realize the necessity of an umbrella.

But today's Dublin also includes tech companies, many located in the lovely Georgian houses that line the city's streets. High-rises, cosmopolitan restaurants and hotels continue to spring up next door to traditional taverns and friendly guesthouses. A beehive of construction work aimed at improving the city's infrastructure buzzes around them.

Dublin is a city in transition, from medieval capital to an exciting commercial center—a hip, electric city, astonishing even visitors who make it their business to stay on Europe's cutting edge. Dublin's down-to-earth charm is still there, but bohemian urbanity has moved in beside it. Now known for its vibrant nightlife, Dublin has become a favorite city-break destination for young European visitors. You could spend a week in Dublin and still not cover all the attractions.
