Join your friends, neighbors, and local business owners for the 36th annual Smith Mountain Lake Cleanup Day on May 4!

Neighborhood groups, businesses, families, civic organizations and others are invited to participate in the organized event or plan their own cleanup anytime in May.

“For now, we’re asking residents, business owners, community organizations and visitors who want to participate to mark their calendars while the TPISML committee nails down details such as dumpster sites,” said Kristina Sage, executive director of the Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission (TLAC), which has organized the event since 1988 in conjunction with the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce (SMLRCC) and the Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA).

As in past years, volunteers who pre-register will receive a free T-shirt, work gloves, heavy duty trash bags and an invitation to a post-event celebration dinner.

Since it opened in 2004, the Smith Mountain Lake Discovery Shop has provided unique and quality merchandise at affordable prices to the community. All merchandise in the Discovery Shop is donated by community members who want to support the mission of the American Cancer Society. Proceeds raised from the sale of donated items are used to help fund cancer research and local programs and services!

The area surrounding Smith Mountain Lake is full of important history! Many people who live in the area year-round have visited the Booker T. Washington National Monument at some point, but many guests to the area may not know it is so close to the lake.

Visiting the Booker T. Washington National Monument is an incredible educational experience for guests of all ages.

On June 9, 2008 the Booker T. Washington National Monument was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) to form Friends of Booker T. Washington National Monument. The purpose of this group is to support the Park in areas where federal shortages can not support programs, events and personnel. The Friends, unencumbered by Federal regulations, seek to provide the means for additional programming, community outreach, advocacy, and financial assistance. In addition to volunteer time. The Friends implement an annual program for membership and raise funds and awareness for the park.
