Myrtle Beach recently set a new record for the number of building permits issued in a fiscal year.
Do you like the name “Myrtle Beach?” We can thank Mrs. Addie Burroughs for that name….
Earlier names for Myrtle Beach included Long Bay, Withers and New Town (Conway was known as “old town”). In 1900, a contest was held to give New Town an official name, and Addie Burroughs, widow of Franklin G. Burroughs, proposed “Myrtle Beach” because of the wax myrtle bushes growing abundantly. The second-place suggestion was “Edgewater.”
By the way, no other incorporated cities or towns exist with the name “Myrtle Beach.” Myrtle, Myrtle Grove and Myrtle Island all exist, but our city is the only Myrtle Beach!

Myrtle Beach was the birthplace of Sports Illustrated magazine! Henry Luce, publisher of TIME and Life magazines, sent 67 executives to Myrtle Beach in 1954 to work on a new weekly sports magazine. The group arrived by train at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot, then met at Pine Lakes International Country Club, where they came up with the idea for Sports Illustrated. The first issue sold for 25 cents.
By the way, this is the 95th anniversary of Pine Lakes International, built as part of the Woodside brothers’ development of the Ocean Forest Hotel and Country Club. The club and hotel were designed by New York architect Raymond Hood, and construction on the club began in 1926. When completed in 1927, it offered a 27-hole golf course designed by Robert White, a course designer and future president of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA). The current golf course layout dates to 1946.

Did you know... That Myrtle Beach has been a sports tourism destination since 1948? As many as 10 minor league baseball teams, including the farm team for the Boston Braves, held spring training camps in Myrtle Beach on the former Air Force Base during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Following World War II, the U.S. government returned the Army Air Force property to the City of Myrtle Beach. Baseball clubs that held spring training camps in Florida had the idea to bring their training camps to Myrtle Beach. In 1948, with ample space available, four baseball fields were created. The tower in the middle provided a perfect lookout station. Managers and coaches could watch four games simultaneously! Hundreds of players, coaches and scouts used the base land after World War II for off-season workouts and exhibition games, too. The baseball boom ended in 1953 when the U.S. Air Force made plans to re-open a base in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach's beach is getting busy! Please remember, and educate others, to stay off of our sand dunes. Dunes are a natural form of protection from the ocean, and are home to various species of animals. You also damage the plants that're holding the dunes together by walking on them. Without these plants, wind would erode the sand off the dune, diminishing its effectiveness as a natural barrier. It is illegal to disturb or damage the dunes, the sand fencing or the sea grass oats. Stay on the boardwalks and marked paths!
