Myrtle Beach’s “umbrellas-only” rule takes effect Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 29. The policy was created in 2014 when tents and other large shading devices became so plentiful at peak times and locations that they blocked access and visibility to the water’s edge. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, only circular umbrellas up to seven-and-a-half feet in diameter are allowed on the beach. And they must be in-line-with or behind the established umbrella line. Other shading devices are not allowed during the peak summer months, with the exception of infant tents no larger than four feet wide by three feet deep and three feet high. Visit the Shading Devices page at https://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/i_want_to/learn_about/tents_and_umbrellas.php. Myrtle Beach allows tents and canopies up to 12-feet-by-12-feet the remaining nine months of the year – from the day after Labor Day to the day before Memorial Day. Note that dates and rules vary in other location jurisdictions. Be sure to check local laws. Don't let a fine ruin your day... don't forget Myrtle Beach's fireworks laws changed last year with the state of South Carolina's rule change. The rule change allows fireworks on private property – with limits about time and manner – but prohibits fireworks completely on the beach and on other public property. Violations of the law are a civil infraction instead of a misdemeanor, with a $250 fine for the first offense and a $500 fine for second and subsequent violations in the same year.

Under the new law, fireworks are allowed on private property between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., subject to the property owner’s permission, and until 12:30 a.m. on July 5 and New Year’s Day. Again, fireworks are prohibited at all times on the beach and on other public property, with a fine of $250 for violations. Further, minors are not allowed to shoot fireworks at any time unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

It is illegal in Myrtle Beach to shoot or throw fireworks toward any person, animal, structure or vehicle, including golf carts. The $250/$500 fine applies for violations. It also is illegal to shoot or throw fireworks from a vehicle or to discharge personal fireworks within 500 feet of any church, hospital or school or within 300 feet of any gas station or business where flammable goods are sold.

Remember that fireworks are not allowed on the beach or other public property, except for professional displays approved by the Fire Marshal. While fireworks are allowed on private property until 10:00 p.m., please keep your neighbors and pets in mind, and do not disturb their peace.

Littering is illegal in Myrtle Beach. Please pick-up after yourself and use the trash cans provided. Why? Because it's easy to do and benefits all of us. Every morning our beach clean-up crews are picking up after people who have littered our beach. You can see some of their recent trash bounty in this photo, capturing a portion of the pile. Empty cans, towels, shoes, clothes, coolers, toys, etc. all left behind on our shore. Thank you to our beach crews at Myrtle Beach's Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Department who are up before the sun keeping our beach beautiful, and catching this trash before it ends up in the ocean.

Violations of our littering ordinance is a misdemeanor, subject to a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail, upon conviction.
