Closures remain in effect for the entirety of the Pisgah National Forest.

“We initially focused most of our efforts on helping our neighbors and first responders by clearing roads and improving access to critical infrastructure throughout the area,” said Forest Supervisor James Melonas. “We recognize the significance getting to connect with nature has with everyone who lives in Western North Carolina. After thoroughly assessing the conditions on the Nantahala and found that it was safe, we knew the time was right to begin inviting our neighbors back to the forest.”

The public is advised to use caution on roads and trails. Hurricane impacts could still include down and fallen trees and limbs, loose rocks, soft shoulders and damaged or blocked trails.
For more information on Hurricane Helene closures, call the Southern Region Hurricane Hotline (404)-939-4485 or visit the forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/nfsnc.

An update from the Franklin, NC area of western North Carolina.

The conditions here from are vastly improved. We did not suffer the flooding that has so severely affected areas east of us.

We wanted to let you know that the town of Franklin and surrounding communities are open and are here for you. If you are planning to travel to the area, please ensure that your lodging is still available and if not, make definite arrangements before arriving.

Most businesses are open, we have just about all restored internet and cell service, though there may be some areas still affected that we aren’t aware of at this time. Please also understand that not all businesses can take debit/credit cards, so plan accordingly to have cash on hand. Banks in the area have also been affected and cash availability in town has been limited.

Please know that our businesses and community are here to welcome you if you’re wanting to visit the mountains in the coming days and weeks. We appreciate your support during this time and look forward to seeing you.

Our annual Pumpkinfest is scheduled to be on October 19th and is still happening.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the residents of Western North Carolina who have been impacted by the devastating effects of Helene. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has been working tirelessly to restore a sense of normalcy during this challenging time.

We are pleased to announce that passenger rail operations from Bryson City to the Nantahala Gorge will resume on Monday, September 30. Reservations are now available.

We understand that current road conditions may prevent some passengers from making their reserved trips. Please call 800-872-4681 to modify.

North Carolina's Nantahala Lake is one of the prettiest mountain lakes in the Great Smoky Mountains. Located within the Nantahala National Forest, the lake's crystal clear water is surrounded by the gorgeous Western North Carolina mountains that create a lush, green backdrop. The lake and surrounding mountains are home to plenty of wildlife including black bears, deer, bald eagles, ospreys and great blue herons which are all commonly seen here. The lake's name, "Nantahala," comes from the Cherokee word meaning "Land of the Noonday Sun," a reference to the area's deep gorges and valleys that only receive direct sunlight at midday.
