North Carolina's Nantahala Lake is one of the prettiest mountain lakes in the Great Smoky Mountains. Located within the Nantahala National Forest, the lake's crystal clear water is surrounded by the gorgeous Western North Carolina mountains that create a lush, green backdrop. The lake and surrounding mountains are home to plenty of wildlife including black bears, deer, bald eagles, ospreys and great blue herons which are all commonly seen here. The lake's name, "Nantahala," comes from the Cherokee word meaning "Land of the Noonday Sun," a reference to the area's deep gorges and valleys that only receive direct sunlight at midday.

COSTUME CONTEST: Meet in the food court in front of the stage at 11:30 am. All dogs are welcome in the contest, and must be on a leash (strollers are okay, but it's harder to see your dog). Participants will then parade from the stage down Main Street to the Derby area, where they will be judged.
THE DOXIE DERBY race starts at noon, and is only for daschunds.
After the race, the winners of the costume contest will be announced.
