The Chesapeake Bay deadrise is a type of work boat used for raising crabs, oysters, and fish up from the depths. “Deadrise,” in nautical terms, describes the degree of “V” shape in a boat’s hull. A flat-bottomed boat has a deadrise of 0°; a hull with a deep “V,” 24° of deadrise. The Chesapeake Bay deadrise has a flat V shape for the hull—ideal for the shallow (and occasionally rough) waters of the Bay.
