State mandates requiring commercial health plans to cover the cost of services for children with autism have resulted in more children being diagnosed and treated for the disorder, according to research published this week in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. Until recently, most health insurance plans did not cover the high costs associated with such care. https://www.autismspeaks.org/science/science-news/state-insurance-mandates-increase-access-affordable-autism-care

Every year an estimated 388,000 deaths due to hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) occur in U.S. nursing homes. The fact that nursing homes have evolved into post-acute skilled nursing facilities has increased the potential for the spread of HAIs. Then there is also cold and flu season, which rampantly spreads viruses and respiratory illnesses amongst the immunocompromised residents. - See more at: http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Fighting-Infections-Through-Proper-Disinfection--19884 .r0BLMEJC.dpuf

Since 2001, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has cracked down on hospitals where patients contracted infections during or as a result of their stay. In facilities with readmissions within one month of the initial treatment, CMS is reducing or withholding payments.

Although these “fines” have helped reduce readmission rates, roughly one in five Medicare patients still end up returning for treatment. And in August 2015, it was reported that 2,592 hospitals would be hit with penalties, resulting in a combined loss of $420 million. - See more at:http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Preventing-Hospital-Acquired-Infections-And-Readmissions-Fines--18920 .m5TpZtgl.dpuf

The study revealed that the patient’s bed is the epicenter of contamination, with the patient being the source of the contamination. The patient gets a visitor, who sits on the bed briefly and then sits on a chair in the room. The visitor then transfers germs to the surface of the chair from the seat of his or her pants. A nurse comes in and checks the patient’s vitals, then closes the privacy curtain again when she leaves. Those germs now are on the curtain.

The study focuses on a special newly identified strain of MRSA associated with poultry. MRSA is often found in chickens, pigs and other food animals. Researchers know that farmers, farm workers, veterinarians and others working directly with livestock are at risk of MRSA infections. However, this new study, by an international team of researchers headed by Robert Skov, MD, at Statens Serum Institute and Lance Price, PhD, of the Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) at the George Washington University, shows that people with no exposure to livestock are becoming colonized and infected with this new strain of poultry-associated MRSA — most likely by eating or handling contaminated poultry meat.

Cutting back on the size of a soap shot may feel like a means to control usage, but ultimately, the end user makes the final call. Instead, facilities should focus on educating staff and end users on proper handwashing techniques, which, in turn, can help to ensure that they don’t use too much soap or — more importantly — not enough. - See more at: http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Promoting-Proper-Handwashing-Techniques---19897 .JnWsbYAh.dpuf

An ancient remedy to treat severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal ailments, f***l microbiota transplant (FMT) has become increasingly recognized as an effective therapy for multiple recurrent CDI. Mentions of the novel therapy date back to fourth century China, with the practice later called “yellow soup.”
Contemporary FMT aims to restore balanced and healthy bacteria in the colon through a transfer of donor f***s and thus break the cycle of imbalance and infection, especially for those patients with recurring or nonresponsive CDI.

Kids who play video games much more than an hour a day may experience behavior problems, a Spanish study suggests. Children who limit gaming time to an hour or two a week, however, may experience cognitive benefits such as faster responses to visual cues. "It is a fact that our children expend a relevant proportion of their time in front of a screen, which may be good and even necessary," said lead study author Dr. Jesus Pujol of the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona. "Nevertheless, a time limit is arguably recommendable, as is the combination of gaming with physical or outdoor activity and the supervision of video gaming's potential effects on children's socialization," Pujol added by email.

A little dust may seem harmless, but scientists have identified a number of potentially hazardous chemicals in the dust found in households, according to a new review study. The researchers analyzed information from 26 previous studies that included data on dust samples collected from homes in 14 U.S. states. Results revealed 45 chemicals in dust that were originally from consumer or household products, such as vinyl flooring, furniture, cleaning products, perfumes, and even pizza boxes and popcorn bags.

Patients who take medicines derived from blood plasma or urine are not at increased risk of catching Zika, even if the body fluids come from countries where the virus is prevalent, Europe's drugs regulator said on Wednesday.
Plasma-derived products are used to treat some serious blood conditions and to help fight infections, while urine-based medicines include certain hormone treatments and therapies to help break up blood clots.

The European Medicines Agency, Europe's equivalent of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said its experts had assessed the risks and concluded that manufacturing processes used for such products would inactivate or remove the Zika virus.

Since no one needs extra school-related stress, one California teen decided to use her tech skills to fix lunchroom worries. Huffington Post reports Natalie Hampton, a 16-year-old from Sherman Oaks, California launched a new app called Sit With Us, which matches people with someone to sit with at lunch. Natalie started the app because she was bullied in middle school and had to eat alone all the time.

For girls, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is more likely to amplify issues with defiance and acting out than problems with depression or anxiety, a research review suggests.
Compared to other girls, girls with the ADHD are more than five times as likely to have so-called oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and more than nine times as likely to have conduct disorder, the study found.

A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that teenagers get could improve their insulin resistance and prevent the future onset of diabetes. "High levels of insulin resistance can lead to the development of diabetes," said lead author Karen Matthews, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry. "We found that if teens that normally get six hours of sleep per night get one extra hour of sleep, they would improve insulin resistance by 9 percent." The study, appearing in the October issue of the journal Sleep, tracked the sleep duration and insulin resistance levels of 245 healthy high school students.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends:
• Enabling only children who are old enough to read, understand and properly use a microwave.
• Having potholders nearby, and teaching children to always use them when removing food.
• Explaining to children the importance of stirring microwaved food before eating to distribute heat and avoid burns.
Teaching children how to open containers so that steam doesn't blow directly into the face or hands.

Most kids need at least nine hours of sleep each night, Stout-Aguilar said. It's also a good idea to make sure children get enough vitamin C to boost their immune system, she added. Parents should also teach their children how to contain germs and keep their hands clean. Show kids how to cover their coughs and sneezes with the inside of their elbow or a tissue, Stout-Aguilar said. She said kids must also be taught how to wash their hands properly.

Top reasons children (or anyone) should avoid soda:
1) It increases your blood pressure. A study (March 2011) links soda consumption to higher blood pressure.
2) Soda destroys your teeth because of the sugar and the acidity.
3) It contains an ingredient banned in over 100 countries. About 10% of soda flavors contain BVO, or brominated vegetable oil, which is banned by the World Health organization and 100 countries.
4) It causes obesity or weight gain. Calories from drinks including soda make up over 20% of the total daily calories consumed by Americans, according to a 2004 article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
5) It cause bones to loose calcium… yes osteoporosis. For these reasons and many more, sodas are not to be offered in Group Family Day Care and Family Day Care programs - only health beverages fruit juice, water, low fat milk.

Group family day care, Family Day Care and everyone should use EDITH – Exit Drills in the Home. When a fire detector sounds in the home, individuals have less than 2 ½ minutes to evacuate or leave. The heat and toxic fumes can go higher than 1000*F. That’s super hot!! If there is a fire, roll out of bed, keep low, test door with back of hand, use emergency exit if usual exits are impassable, and go to family meeting place once you are outside.

More is NOT better; meaning that using more bleach can actually leave behind a toxic residue that is dangerous to children.
