The Crime Traveler

The Crime Traveler A steady diet of Scooby Doo, R.L. Join me, as I explore the world with crime in mind...

Stine and Christopher Pike books and an (un)timely screening of Silence of the Lambs as a pre-teen led to a life-long interest in true crime and related media. After a decade-long career in the travel industry, I charted a different course for myself and earned a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice, specializing in Criminology and Deviance, from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City

. Further specialization in stalking and threat-assessment deepens my understanding of the world around us, especially as seen through crime.

Dear Horace Mann School Alumni,

As some of you may be aware, Max Chung (a rising 12th grader), ran away from his home twelve days ago and has not been seen or heard from since. Max left his family home without his cell phone or wallet. While Max's father continues to work with the police, serious concerns remain about Max's well-being.

This is not the first time that Max has run away. Our Director of Public Safety, Mr. Michael McCaw, continues to lead the effort to search for Max in cooperation with Max's father, the police departments from a growing number of states, the Port Authority, the MTA, the colleges and universities in the Tri-State area, and a growing number of youth and adult shelters. As of last week, we've added a private agency to the team, one that specializes in finding young adults in Max's situation.

The help I am looking for from each of you is your willingness to post the flier below on your social media accounts to help spread the word. I ask that any posts on social media include the following hashtags:

If you or your acquaintances on social media come across any information about Max and his possible whereabouts, Mr. McCaw ([email protected]) and I ([email protected]) remain available via email, 24/7, and via phone during work hours. If interested parties would prefer to engage with the NYPD, they may do so by contacting Detective Borough Bronx at 718-378-8083.

I am humbled by the support we have received to date, and thank you for considering my request.

Sincerely,
Tom

Thomas M. Kelly, Ph.D.

Housed in an eye-catching glass and steel building, the revamped International Spy Museum is a labyrinth of virtual and real sights and sounds that document the evolution of the sometimes dark and dangerous world of spying. See photos.

- This is no surprise...

Last year, Florida was home to 18 of the country's top 50 cities for fraud, according to a new report from the Federal Trade Commission. There were 1,002 reports of fraud for every 100,000 people in Florida — the highest rate of any state in the country.

File under: Huh?
(AKA: Things I didn't expect to learn from the Kristen Bell episode of the "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" podcast...)

1) Conan O'Brien is a crime traveler!
2) The house where Leon Trotsky was killed is now a museum in City.
3) On a trip to Mexico City - Conan visited the Museo casa de Leon Trotsky, and he now sports a keychain effigy of its namesake from the gift shop.
..and because I listened to the DaxShepard episode next, and Conan referenced a 70s style key party (a la Ang lee's The Ice Storm)...I now have a short story brewing in my mind...of a key party wherein there are TWO Trotsky keychains in the bowl, leading to hijinks and romance...ok, I digress.

Have a listen...

- From The New York Times... A fascinating look into a city foreign, both in place and spirit. A history of camps, desolation, and complete darkness and subfreezing temps for months of the year, a city thrives(?).

Norilsk, once a slave labor camp, now prospers as a source of palladium. Not bad, except for the two months of darkness and temperatures of minus 80 F.
