2nd Meeting of the Secreterial Election Community Meeting
The museum sponsored a successful event for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Awareness Day on Friday, May 5, 2023. Special thanks to all of the community members who came out to join the walk in memory of loved ones whose lives were tragically taken from us. Thanks to Reynelda James for offering a beautiful strong prayer to start off the Solidarity Walk, Nick Cortez for singing a prayer song to unite the walkers, and Steven Wadsworth, Vice-Chairman for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, for opening remarks. Also, thanks to Beverly and Autumn Harry, Great Basin Indigenous Women, for providing important information regarding the issue of MMIW/MMIP Awareness. It was wonderful to see our community come together and join other tribal members from local reservations. The Solidarity Walk was an awesome experience with the Ancestors watching over all the supporters. The strength in prayers was the pillar that kept everyone in a safe place and watching out for one another. Midway through the walk, the children led the walk and carried themselves in a humble manner of remembrance. Big thanks to the Rangers and EMS staff for the traffic control and being available for medical attention, if needed.
Once we made it back to the museum grounds, there were information booths set up and a few vendors. Thanks to the tribal programs who set up tables to offer resources and information about their services – Diana Mitchell, Sumunumu Drug And Alcohol Prevention; Michele Smith and Skylar Sampson, Tribal Transit Program. Other booths set up included ITC-N Headstart, NUI Youth Prevention Services, NUI Victim Services, ITC-N Victim Services, and RSIC Victim Services. A public presentation was made and a film showing, “Justice for Our Sisters and Earth Mother.” Some of our community members shared their personal experience with Missing and Murdered Relatives and the healing that takes place. It’s important to support all of our relatives in grieving, especially t
