Interesting nautical effect, and a good "pearl" to share with your submarine friends the next time you get together (soon hopefully!):

The Kelvin Wake

Did you know that the angle of a wake behind any boat is predictable?
Lord Kelvin--the same British scientist whose name is immortalized in the scale for absolute temperature- first described the predictable shape of a ship's wake in 1887. He theorized that the wake behind any ship--independent of its size or length, be it a kayak or a mega-tanker or a submarine--always created a wave that encompassed an arc of approximately 39 degrees from side to side. Stated otherwise, the angle of the wake is 19.5 degrees to either side from the imaginary line representing the longitudinal axis (or heading) of the ship creating it. Kelvin also described the orientation of the cusp, transverse, and divergent waves that compose the wake. See the attached diagram for details.

Of course, there are a few exceptions to this rule, when water depth is too shallow or when Sea States are high, but in general the rule holds up to scrutiny. The next time you're out on the water, look back and take in that beautiful 39-degree wake!

Check out a whole chapter of such "rules of thumb" in our book "Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots", available at Amazon in all formats! Includes the most comprehensive and entertaining submarine glossary of terms/slang that you'll find in print.
