NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The City of North Myrtle Beach continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby.

Public Works has set up a FREE Sand Station at 1st Avenue South (adjacent to the City's Sanitation Center). This sand is first come, first serve. Bring your own sandbags. Sandbags can be purchased in packs of 25 at these stores located in North Myrtle Beach - Boulineau's, Vereen's, Windy Hill Hardware, Home Depot, and Lowes.

The Fire Department, Police Department, and Public Works are working on final storm preparations.

The Fire Department is ensuring all vehicles and equipment are operationally ready. The Department has a High Water Vehicle and boats with dedicated crews for responses throughout the storm’s impacts in addition to normal staffing.

The Police Department will be coordinating with Public Works and the Fire Department regarding setting up for road closures (as needed). Ocean Rescue will be collecting all Lifeguard Towers off the beach today.

Public Works has begun collecting the beach trash cans and will have them all picked up by Tuesday, August 6. The Sanitation Schedule will remain as normal for now.

The latest weather briefing shows significant rainfall this week. The greatest concern will be on Wednesday and Thursday with high potential of flash flooding impacting Ocean Boulevard, HWY 17, and several other lower lying areas. North Myrtle Beach is projected to see 12-16 inches of rain with some local spots seeing up to 20 inches. Prepare NOW for flooding.

As of right now, the biggest unknown are tidal surge impacts. We will likely not have an indication of this until late Tuesday or early Wednesday. We will see rough surf and minor beach impacts beginning later this evening.

Safety Reminders:
Do NOT remove any manhole or clean out covers. When these covers are removed during weather events, the sewer system floods.

Do NOT drive or walk through flooded roads/areas.

Remember to stay informed by valid, trusted sources.

One of our favorite restaurants.

While the name may suggest a menu heavy on chicken wings, quesadillas and jalapeno poppers, Joe’s Bar & Grill offers a dining experience that rivals some of North Myrtle Beach’s best restaurants

Salute from the Shore fly over! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Join us on the coast of South Carolina for the Salute from the Shore on Thursday, July 4 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Salute from the Shore is a unique opportunity for individuals to salute and honor our Armed Forces while celebrating Independence Day on South Carolina beaches.

The military flyover will begin at 1 PM at Cherry Grove and will stretch the entire length of South Carolina’s coast. This year, as we celebrate Salute from the Shore's 15th year, a C-17 from the Charleston Air Force Base, F16s from the McEntire Joint National Guard Base, and a privately owned Vintage Aircraft will be featured in the flyover.

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE DURING 4TH OF JULY!!

Dogs have jumped fences, broken chains, torn through screen doors, and even leaped through glass doorsβ€”sometimes seriously injuring themselves in the processβ€”in a desperate (and futile) effort to escape the bombardment. Not surprisingly, after fireworks displays, animal shelters report an influx of lost cats and dogs. Many animals who disappear on the Fourth of July are never found again.

Play it safe by taking the following precautions to help your animal companions survive the annual reenactment of the Revolutionary War with as little stress as possible:

1. Never take dogs to fireworks displays or leave them outside alone during fireworks. Instead, keep them (as well as cats) indoors, and if possible, stay home

2. Be sure that your animals are wearing collars or harnesses with an up-to-date ID tag; a microchip would be a good idea, too, just in case (your vet can provide that).

3. Close all your windows, curtains, and blinds. Frightened dogs sometimes attempt to jump through windows, even on upper floors. Turn on a radio that’s tuned to a classical-music station, play specially designed music to calm dogs composed by Through a Dog’s Ear, or turn on the TV, window air conditioner, fan, or dehumidifier to help drown out the sound of the fireworks. When I have to leave my dog home alone, I also like to put on Relax My Dog’s YouTube Channel for hours of uninterrupted calming music.

4. Distract your dog by playing games, and be generous with treats for ignoring explosions. (In addition to being a reward, food has a beneficial effect on brain chemistry.

5. A Thundershirt provides gentle, consistent pressure that can help both dogs and cats feel more secure and relaxed during fireworks displays and thunderstorms.

6. Melatonin (a naturally occurring hormone that can also be synthesized) works wonders to calm dogs down (the dosage is 3 mg for a 50-lb. dogβ€”adjust the dose by bodyweight). There are also many other natural calming supplements for dogs, including herbs, homeopathics, and nutriceuticals, available at any pet supply storeβ€”you may want to try more than one to see which one works best for your dog.

It is up to us to keep our animal companions calm and comfortable. Follow the above suggestions to make your dog or cat feel safe and secure this Fourth of July, and share these tips with your friends and family, too!
