The first golf course in Myrtle Beach was designed by Robert White, a professional golfer and course designer who served as the first President of the Professional Golf Association of America. This course is now known as the Pine Lakes Golf Course, but when it first opened in the 1920s, it was known as the Ocean Forest Golf Course. It opened a few years before the Ocean Forest Hotel. Golf did not become a major local industry until the 1960s, when promoters began offering vacation packages allowing visitors to reserve hotel rooms and golf tee times together. Within three decades, the number of local golf courses grew from fewer than 10 to more than 80. A major draw for golf courses in Horry County was that golf could be played year-round, since snow and ice were rare. The Grand Strand continues to be a major destination for golf, as the Dunes Golf and Beach Club hosted a PGA Tour event this May, the first PGA event held on the Grand Strand.

I know many who come to the beach want to have a good time and don’t think about filling in the holes or leaving trash around. But it is turtle nesting season. This hole and others were found this morning in Garden City. Here are some tips from our friends at S.C.U.TE. that will help you and the turtles.

1. When you leave the beach each evening, take your belongings and trash with you. Balloons and plastics are particularly dangerous because they look like turtles’ favorite food – jellyfish — when floating in the water. And please take down your shelters, beach chairs and tents as they present an entanglement danger to the turtles, and they can create obstructions which frighten the mothers and cause them to leave the beach without laying their eggs.

2. Please fill in your holes so that neither turtles nor people fall in them or over them overnight.

3. Lights out, please. It is VERY important to have a dark beach for the turtles to come ashore and lay their eggs. Artificial lighting (flashlights, glow sticks, and camera flashes) disorients the babies and discourages the mothers. After dark, please turn off outdoor lighting and shut curtains or blinds where indoor lighting can be seen from the beach. And do not use flashlights on the beach at night. They are just as detrimental as a floodlight.

4. Do Not Disturb! If you see a turtle nesting, please respect her needs and leave her alone to take care of Nature’s work. It’s okay to watch quietly from a distance, but do not take pictures or shine lights in her direction, and certainly do not disturb the nest in any way. Disturbing any sea turtle, its nest or its eggs is punishable under Federal law and carries large fines and possible jail sentencing.

If you see a turtle on the beach, leave it alone! If it is injured or somehow in distress, call this number, 800-922-5431, and record the nature of the problem and the location of the turtle.

South Carolina’s state “tree,” the Sabal palmetto (cabbage palm), is not actually a tree, but rather more closely related to grass.

In botany, the number of embryonic leaves in a plant seed (cotyledons) is one way flowering plants (angiosperms) are classified. The majority of trees are woody eudicots, while palms are herbaceous monocots like grasses.

More About Our State Symbol:
The cabbage palm is an evergreen perennial in the palm family (Arecaceae). Tiny, cream-colored flowers bloom from it, followed by fruit called a drupe (like peaches and cherries produce). This species’ native range is the southeast of our coastal plain region. Its habitat includes maritime forests and other plant communities along the coast.

The confusion for a tree is based on the height they grow to. However, palms don’t have a trunk (woody stem) nor do they grow in diameter (secondary growth) like trees do.

Nature observers along the coast, we need your help! 🦀

As the full moon approaches on Tuesday the 23rd, horseshoe crabs will scuttle ashore to lay their eggs.

Ocean tides are at their highest under full and new moons - and horseshoe crab eggs have the best chance of surviving when buried at the high tideline.

If you see horseshoe crabs, report your sighting! This helps us better understand our crabby friends to make informed decisions about South Carolina's shorelines.

Located in the northeastern corner of Horry County, Waties Island has been an important site for Native American archaeology. Artifacts are undisturbed because the island was never developed. One important discovery has been the existence of shell middens. These are mounds of shells left over from harvesting and processing of oysters and clams. These shell middens show archaeologists that Native people were using the shores of Horry County to collect and eat shellfish more than a thousand years ago. You can see a layer of shells in the picture of an archaeological dig here.
