Oh Newfoundland! What an amazing day we had today...our last full day on the island. We woke up in Rocky Harbor this morning to beautiful blue skies and sunshine, and although the clouds rolled in while we were cruising from Norris Point across Bonne Bay to Woody Point, the skies cleared again in the afternoon. On our cruise we saw bald eagles, learned about beautiful Bonne Bay and Gros Morne National Park, heard a few stories and jokes, and had our own private mini-concert!

Next, we walked on the earth's mantle and learned so much from the park interpreter in the Tablelands - a geological wonder unlike any other.

Finally, we had lunch and time to stroll in the small town of Woody Point (and stroll is code for 'everyone had ice cream while sitting in the sun') 🍦🌞🍦🌞🍦

What an incredible way to end our time in this incredible area. ❀️

Another amazing day in Newfoundland! After a foggy start, somehow the day that we expected rain all day turned out to be beautiful for our drive back to Rocky Harbour. We were able to make a stop at Arches Provincial Park, which is a natural rock formation with beautiful views and some really cool rocks (see the heart shaped rock picture below!). Tomorrow is our last full day in Newfoundland...can't wait to explore more of Gros Morne National Park.

Some great photos from our impromptu boat tour yesterday in Red Bay. We never expected such marvelous weather and were so fortunate that Whaler's Quest Ocean Adventures contacted us to see if we'd like to do a quick cruise around the harbor. A fun way to learn about the area, the history, seafood, traditions, and what it's like to live on the coast of Labrador in a town with a population of 150 people. THANK YOU for the experience!

Yesterday we traveled to Red Bay, Labrador and arrived just as the sun was emerging from the fog. Red Bay is a small fishing village with a population of approx 150. Red Bay is notable as one of the most precious underwater archaeological sites in the Americas. Between 1530 and the early 17th century, it was a major Basque whaling
area. We toured the Red Bay National Historic Site, had a delicious lunch, and then because the weather was so glorious, we had a surprise bonus activity - either a boat tour of the harbor or a visit to the new Rhight Whale museum.

After our visit to Red Bay, we traveled back to L'anse au Claire, stopping for breathtaking photo ops and to visit L'anse Amour Lighthouse.

What an absolutely amazing day!!!

A few fun pics from yesterday afternoon in L'anse au Claire (which means "clear water cove)! Kelly and Bruce decided to dip their toes (feet, legs) into the brisk waters of the Strait of Belle Isle and many people in our group walked along the beach looking for sea glass, shells, and just taking in the scenery.

It's a foggy start to our day today! Leaving Blanc Sablon, Quebec (a few miles from the Labrador border) and crossing over to St. Barbe, NL. Have already met some interesting people while waiting to board, two men touring on motorcycles were willing to go on our bus to share their travel stories, and a group of cyclists were really happy to accept our extra bananas!

Bad cell and wifi service in Labrador, so the posts are slow! Yesterday, we left St Anthony and started our day by visiting two Viking or Norse sites - L'anse aux Meadows and Norstead. The fog, damp, and cool temps gave us a better understanding of what life was like for the people who lived here (and still live here!). The reason held off for us, and we saw 4 more icebergs on the drive. In the afternoon, we made our way Labrador via a ferry across the Strait of Belle Isle. We considered ourselves lucky to have dodged the weather yet again and had an amazing day!

Ok, there's WAAAAY too many pictures on this post, but that's because we saw ICEBERGS today!!!! The skies cleared and we had vibrant blue skies, lots of sunshine, and one MASSIVE berg with lots of character! About 180 feet high, with one cool tower (the other side fell yesterday) and other bits showing. Where you see the green, that's the part of the iceberg that is under water (about 80-90%!!!). It's hard to explain how big it was and just how beautiful. The smaller one we saw was also super cool, but in a different way. Two other huge ones in the distance...hope to see more tomorrow!

Yesterday we braved the cool, damp air and hiked into Western Brook Pond for a cruise! The fog made the scenery mystical and the trip (even without the sun) was magical, fun, and we'll worth the walk in to the lake/fjord/pond. This group is amazing and there were smiles allllll day, including when a lot of the group tried the local specialty- cod tongues - at dinner.

Yesterday we made our way from Central Newfoundland to Western Newfoundland and Gros Morne National Park. Although the weather was not the best, we were able to stop at Lobster Cove Lighthouse to take in the views before checking into our hotel in Rocky Harour where we enjoyed a fabulous night of entertainment with the band Anchors Aweigh! Fun was had had all!!

We had a spectacular day yesterday! We started our day going in and out of the fog on our drive to Twillingate Island. Upon arrival, we picked up our local guide, Chris (or maybe the second Dave! πŸ˜†) and went to Long Point Lighthouse, which overlooks Twillingate Harbour. We learned a lot about living in the area from Chris, a lifelong resident, before having a delicious lunch and time for souvenir shopping (lots of it!).

Afterward, we headed to Fisherman Dave’s fishing museum where we learned about cod fishing, how old buildings were moved across the water and lots of tall tales.

Before returning to our hotel, we had some time to explore the town of Twillingate and take in the beautiful views, colorful houses, and cute shops. The combination of fun people, good food and snacks, and scenic beauty made for a perfect day of relaxation and adventure.

Yesterday, upon our arrival in Gander, we visited the North Atlantic Aviation Museum and met our local guide, Diane. After a short visit to the museum, we traveled to the airport, which was known as the "Crossroads of the World" because planes that were crossing the Atlantic had to stop in Gander to re-fuel. We learned more about the airport, Gander, and some of the most famous visitors (Fidel Castro went sledding here!, Queen Elizabeth, the Beetles, Elvis, and the list goes on!),and about the day that 38 planes were forced to land here.

On 9/11, nearly 7,000 passengers were stranded here and Diane shared stories about that day, but more importantly...the days that followed. The remarkable story has been turned into the Broadway Show "Come From Away". Hearing the stories firsthand never ceases to amaze me....kindness, resilience, strength, community, laughter, heart break, generosity... those are the words that come to mind. Gander is a special place.❀️

We got Screeched In! This is a tiny glimpse of our evening in Gander last night at the Canadian Legion.

The Newfoundland Screech-In is a ceremony that Newfoundlanders perform for non-Newfoundlanders to welcome them into Newfie culture. The ceremony often takes place in pubs or homes and involves a shot of Screech rum, a short recitation, and kissing a cod. The ceremony can also include eating a piece of bologna, also known as a Newfoundland steak.

We are honorary NEWFOUNDLANDERS!!! Wooo honorary. Lots of photos to come....what an amazing night at the Gander Canadian Legion with Beulah, Oz, and Brian! Delicious dinner, heartwarming stories, and one of the funniest screech-ins ever! Kissing thr cod was worth it 🐟😘

Welcome to the Rock!!! Wooohoooo, we made it to Newfoundland! Wooohoooo! We left New Brunswick this morning and made our way across the Canso Causeway to Cape Breton Island. The skies cleared as we arrived at our lodge in Baddeck and it was a beautiful evening for a stroll into town and dinner overlooking Bras d'Or Lake (which is actually an inland sea). Tomorrow we are heading to Newfoundland!!!

Today was hands down ahhh-mazing!!! We were able to see the wild horses of Corolla, NC - these Wild Spanish Mustangs were originally brought to the Outer Banks in the 1500s on Spanish ships. Aboard our safari-style vehicles we were able to observe them and be amazed by their beauty and wild nature. Then we were off to the picturesque, waterfront town of Duck for a chance for lunch and some shopping. After some downtime at our hotel, we capped off our final evening in the Outer Banks with an incredible dinner! So many wonderful memories from our Outer Banks Escape!

Another lucky Terrapin group got to see the AMAZING play "Come From Away" today. This show is simply the best, it proves that there is so much good in our world...especially in Gander Newfoundland. If you haven't seen it, you should! If you haven't heard of it, you should read one of the books about the events that inspired the play.

On 9/11, 38 planes from around the world were forced to land in Gander, and the play explores the emotions of that time and the relationships that were formed over the next few days as people were forced to stay on an island in the Atlantic that most people had never heard of. It is a remarkable true story and it is definitely our all time favorite play.

The music, the story, the simplicity of the set, and the complexity of the characters and emotions....it gives you all the feels.

Oh! And we had a delicious lunch at Maggiano's Little Italy before the show πŸ˜‹! Yum!
