Walk the Derry Walls on our 2023 Scotland & Ireland tour. The Derry Walls are the largest ancient monument in Northern Ireland and claim the most complete circuit of ramparts of any surviving town walls in Ireland. Built between 1613-1619, the town walls have 22 restored cannons from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, including the famous ‘Roaring Meg’, used during the Siege of Derry. Visitors can also view the four original gates – Bishop’s Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Shipquay Gate and Butcher Gate, alongside three newer additions – Magazine Gate, Castle Gate and New Gate.

Visit the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast on our 2023 Scotland & Ireland trip! The jail opened in 1845 and was the most modern prison in Ireland at the time. More than 25,000 prisoners resided there over the course of 150 years until it shut its doors in 1996. At first, the prisoners were typically jailed for offenses like stealing food or clothes. It then became a part of the political conflict in Northern Ireland known as "the troubles". Some of the more infamous political figures detained there included Eamon de Valera, Martin McGuinness and Bobby Sands. Seventeen of whom were eventually executed.

Visit the Cobh Heritage Center on our 2023 Ireland trip! The museum tells the story of Irish emigration. Over three million Irish people emigrated from the port. Many had to leave because of the great famine. Others left for a new start and the hope of a better life. The museum also shares the history of two tragic maritime disasters, the Titanic and the Lusitania. Titanic made it's final stop in Cobh before meeting it's fateful end. The Lusitania was sunk in 1915 by German U-boats off the coast of Cobh and the town was involved in the rescue efforts. 🚢

Donegal Castle was the stronghold of the O'Donnell clan, Lords of Tír Conaill and one of the most powerful Gaelic families in Ireland from the 5th to the 16th centuries. Photograph the Hungry Tree in Dublin on your free time during our 2023 Ireland tour. Located on the grounds of the King's Inns, this 80-year-old unremarkable specimen of the London plane tree has become known for having partially consumed a nearby park bench. As the years have passed, the tree has grown, causing it to swallow the parts of the structure that stands in its way. Its gnarled bark now spills over the back of the bench, making it appear as though the seat is being sucked into the tree’s trunk.

The Giant’s Causeway, sitting at the top of Northern Ireland, is an area of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by Fionn mac Cumhaill. (Finn McCool), an Irish giant who picked a fight with Scottish big man Benandonner. Legend has it that the giants loathed each other. And so one day after enduring insults from Benandonner, Fionn built a path to use as stepping-stones to reach Scotland, which was then ripped up by Benandonner. The result was the Giant’s Causeway.

The 2011 structure over the River Foyle bridges a 400-year-old physical and political gap between two sides of a once bitterly divided community. The bridge consists of two structural arms heading in opposite directions, symbolizing the unification of both communities from the opposite sides of the Foyle river. The Protestant Waterside and the Nationalist Bogside are now united in a symbolic handshake across the river.
