"I was 18 years old when, over 7 days, I went blind in my left eye. After a very long couple days in an MRI machine, I was told that I had been battling Multiple Sclerosis as early as 13 years old.

Since my official diagnosis, I have spent much of my life in bed because of pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, mourning who I was, fear for what is ahead, and being terrified that, because of all of that, I’m an obvious burden. I spend a lot of time smiling, being happy, and cutting it up, but that’s to distract me from everything I mentioned above… and it’s exhausting.

In my camera roll of thousands of pictures, this is the only one I can find of me on a “bad day”.

I walk with a cane. I’m always needing to be in bed. I’m always in pain. I’m always one kind or harsh comment away from crying. My memory is full of holes. I’m always bashing myself for not being able to focus or work harder. If I’m not doing any of the above… I’m pushing myself. Pushing myself leads to days of recovery.

Many of you know I’m sick, but don’t know how. This is my everyday. It’s a struggle. It’s my truth."

"An AFO is a device that is used to control instabilities in the lower limb by maintaining proper alignment and controlling motion.

In my case, I use it for foot drop, sometimes called drop foot, a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. If you have foot drop, the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk. Foot drop isn't a disease. Rather, foot drop is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem.

It's not been an easy road accepting that I need mobility aids in my day to day life. First the walking cane, then needing both of them. Some days I decided to push on without them and I pay for it badly. Thanks to the community I've found online on mobility aid users, I now understand they give me the freedom I need to be social.

If you're in a such a position, the community is here for you."

“My MS is officially stabilized...so what now?

What I mean by stabilized is that I do not experience my more severe symptoms. Also, my daily symptoms are a lot milder. That does not mean I don't flare. I'm currently flaring now. But, overall, the severity of the flares has decreased substantially. This is the closest to 'normal' I've been in a long time.

I am dealing with mixed emotions about this recent news. Part of me is ecstatic. The other part feels so guilty. I'm sure you're thinking I sound crazy. Stabilization is the goal we are striving to reach. Then why do I feel this way? I feel something similar to survivor's guilt (not to compare MS to a death sentence). I have had MS for only three years. Why am I the one? I displayed no symptoms before my initial flare. Now I barely experience symptoms at all. It almost feels unfair to other MS folk.

I am working on embracing this new stage in my life and focusing on maintaining my health. MS will always be a part of me. Though, I may not deal with it every day. If someone is dealing with their emotions about milder symptoms, remember it's okay to be happy. It does not invalidate other journies and support for the MS community. Keep giving yourself grace!”
