Pleas help if you are fortunate enough to find one on your beach walk. DON’T put them back in the ocean!

Be careful when walking through seaweed on the beach during the next few months. Washbacks may be tangled in the seaweed!

Washbacks are sea turtle hatchlings that have made it to the open ocean, began eating, and are on their way to the line of Sargassum seaweed, over 50-100 miles in the ocean!

With fall storms, strong ocean currents and winds, sea turtle hatchlings that make it to the seaweed can be pushed back onto the beach even months later - and become a washback.

Washback turtles cannot get back to their Sargassum habitat by themselves. They used all their egg nutrition to swim out that far, and now can’t make the swim back out to thrive.

Do not put them back in the water. They are weak and exhausted. These babies must be taken to the Marine Science Center where they will be cared for. Eventually, when conditions are right, and when there are a good number of them, they will be driven out to the sargassum by boat and released.

Another report from one of our volunteers this morning. Great job, Deena!

I had a special morning on the beach as I was excavating our patrol's only very rare Kemp's Ridley turtle's nest. Before I started digging, I noticed six brand new hatchling tracks had emerged overnight. I followed them to the ocean and found one hatchling stuck in a crab hole. I pulled him out and he was ready to go to the ocean. What a great photo opportunity and the pelicans were right on cue. ❤🐢
I found five more live hatchlings at the bottom of the nest and released them successfully to the ocean as well. I was too busy, keeping birds and people away to take photos.

ELF-ING AROUND ORMOND: A SCAVENGER HUNT TO BOOST LOCAL BIZ!

Ormond Main Street is thrilled to announce a special Elf Scavenger Hunt again as part of this year’s Christmas in July festivities.Saturday, July 20, 2024, to Saturday, July 27, 2024, encouraging residents and visitors to explore and support local businesses while enjoying a unique holiday-themed activity in the heart of summer.

How It Works:

1. Pick Up Your Map: Visit any participating business along Granada Blvd to grab your scavenger hunt map. Each business will hide an elf within their store.

2. Find the Elf: Once you spot the hidden elf, notify a team member to get your map stamped or signed.

3. Collect Stamps: Participants need to collect at least six different stamps/signatures and make at least one purchase. Attach the receipt to your map as proof of purchase.

4. Submit Your Map: Completed maps must be dropped off at Hershey's Ice Cream (145 E Granada Blvd) or the Ormond Main Street office (44a W Granada Blvd) by 4 PM on July 29, 2024.

The drawing for prizes will be held on July 30, 2024, at 10 AM. Participants who collect twelve signatures with at least one purchase will earn two chances to win.

Oh no! We know building castles and digging holes is beach fun, but please, at the end of the day, smooth out the surface of the sand so the babies can make it to the ocean (full disclosure, not all beaches of the world have turtle nesting so many people do not know the importance of filling the holes)

Fill in your holes! These 4 hatchlings were found by Holmes Beach Code Enforcement this morning. They were stuck in the hole using up energy they need for their long swim to the floating sargassum line where they will spend the next few years. You can prevent this! Fill in your holes and spread the word that by filling our holes and leaving the beach flat, we can all help share the beach with sea turtles!

[The officer called AMITW at 1-941-301-8434 to report the hatchlings and they were safely released to the Gulf]
