Turner Bend, where the National Wild and Scenic Mulberry River meets the Pig Trail National Scenic Byway. For over one hundred years travelers have stopped at this spot to admire the river, forests and mountains. The Mulberry River is known for excellent whitewater floating with class II rapids flowing deep in the Ozarks. The Pig Trail is a twisting, curving drive through the Ozarks with views from the valley floor to mountain top vistas.

Sherri Kyle, a Canadian, is bicycling across the United States on the Trans America Off Road Trail. Sherri just peddled the entire length of Mexico before starting in North Carolina on this East to West track. She stopped at Turner Bend Store today to get one of our almost famous sandwiches.

October 13 is the deadline. Only submitted comments will be considered.

The 4th option of "Replace on a New Alignment Alternative" would be best for taxpayers. With alterations to the plan it could also be best for Turner Bend. We request that the design provides easy ingress and egress to the Turner Bend Store and campground. A high percentage of Turner Bend customers are pulling trailers. Large trucks need to be able to make deliveries to the store. Without these deliveries and customers the store business will struggle to remain viable.
We are very concerned that the designed bridge span is too short on the north side of the river on all alternatives. The bridge span should continue to a high point between the pipeline and the Baptist Church to let floodwaters pass through naturally. The suggested high road bed would create a levy which will flood out the land owners on the east side of the highway and the Turner Bend landing area. To the fullest extent possible the "no rise" policy should mean no rise compared to the natural flow.

* Alternative 4 calls for ARDOT to acquire a small amount of land in the Turner Bend campground. As owners of Turner Bend we propose a trade for the existing road bed in front of the store all the way to the current bridge. The southern edge of the construction should begin at a point further south that would allow for a more gentle curve and more safety room in front of the Turner Bend Store.

* The public accesses the Mulberry by using a path just downstream from the existing bridge on the Turner Bend campground side. We request a set of concrete stairs be built into the rip rap to allow continued access to the Mulberry. Also pedestrians should be able to safely cross from one side of Hwy 23 to the other.

* In 1984 the river bank at Turner Bend eroded severely after ARDOT bulldozed the island under the bridge. We request ARDOT reinforce the riverbank with rip rap rock between the Turner Bend landing and the new bridge to rectify this mistake and to protect the new bridge.
