I don't know whether you're going to thank me for giving this info. or you'll want to run screaming. Get a hot cup of cocoa and strap in because here are all the details for Disney's new Genie system. Keep in mind Disney likes to change things but this is the skinny for now! It's a little exhausting but you'll be glad you know.
Genie:
The regular Genie service is an app that pretty much gives suggestions throughout the day to go to certain attractions and dining locations to avoid long wait times (pretty much where Disney wants guests to go to spread out everyone in the park). In my experience, it’s not very useful and suggested a lot of things that I did not want to do even though we input our preferences at the beginning of the day. You won't be able to book the Lightning Lanes. This is free however. To access it you just need to go to your mydisneyexperience.com account.
Genie +:
This essentially is a fast pass on an app. At your reserved time you go to the ride and go to the "Lightning Lane" which is a faster line. There is a Disney scanner that you put your magic band up against or your park pass. After you scan you can make another Genie + reservation for another ride.
However, if you want to choose a ride and it only gives you a time slot that's at the end of the day, you can go ahead and reserve it. Wait two hours and then you can reserve another ride. (For example, if the first reservation I make on my Genie + is for Peter Pan and it's at 5pm, I don't have to wait until I get on the Peter Pan ride to choose another ride. That would be ridiculous to have to wait all day until I could make my next selection. All you have to do is wait two hours and then you can make your next reservation.)
You can make your first reservation at 7am. If you go to your mydisneyexperience.com at 7am you can add Genie + to your accounts each morning. It is $15 per person plus tax for each day. If you buy a whole Disney package, resort and tickets together, then you can buy Genie + for the entire stay all at once.
You can only choose 8 rides for the day at a park and you can't repeat rides.
Take a screenshot on your phone of your reservation times. My system glitched once and it changed my 3:00pm reservation to 5pm. So take a picture of your reserved times. If you have a problem you can show your screenshot to someone at Guest Experiences Team.
If the wait times for rides are long I think it's a good idea to use Genie + but if they are relatively short or moderate I don't know that there is a lot of advantage. If the ride is not very long and you're waiting for your reservation time to start, you can get in the stand by lane and go on the ride, then when you get off you can get in the Lightning Lane and use your reserved time. This helped because there was a descent wait time between reservations.
If you decide to get Genie + I think Magic Bands would be a good purchase if you're visiting the parks more than a few days. It's just so much easier for everyone to swipe their bands at the Lightning Lane for each attraction.
Individual Lightning Lane:
There are two rides for each park that fall under this category. Rise of the Resistance is an Individual Lightning Lane. There is a fee for each ride. You pay for it on the app and you pick a time to reserve.
These Individual Lightning Lane reservations are separate from Genie +. You can schedule these without them affecting your Genie + reservation scheduling. So I can pay for Rise of the Resistance at 7am and still reserve Millennium Falcon Smuggler's Run on Genie + at 7am. (If you are not staying at a Disney Resort you would have to wait until park opens to pay for these rides.)
You are supposed to be able to purchase Individual Lightning Lanes without paying for Genie +.
Note: a lot of times towards the end of the day lines are shorter at popular rides.
YOU WILL GET THE HANG OF IT, IT JUST TAKES A MINUTE.
