5 Travel Tips for Travel to the Caribbean!

Planning a vacation, especially to international destinations can be stressful! However, with the right planning and preparation, you can not only have a great vacation but also save money while visiting your bucket list destination!

1. Do your research for the destination of choice
This helps to avoid surprises and disappointment!

2. Travel off-peak
You can save a lot of money this way. During low season, you can find deep discounts on just about any of the islands you choose to visit.

3. Book travel early
This saves you money, especially if planning to travel during peak travel seasons!

4. Travel light
Airline fees for extra luggage can be pricey. Also, do your research on fees for items you want to bring back with you. While there are duty-free items...there may be fees associated with other items. DO YOUR RESEARCH to avoid added expense!

5. Research accommodations and save money

The Caribbean islands are also known as the ‘West Indies’. This name originated when Christopher Columbus “discovered” these islands after sailing west in search of Asia/Indies after leaving East Asia. Columbus would call the inhabitants of these islands Indians, and the islands he named the “West Indies”, which would be later known as the Caribbean region.

The 6 main languages of the West Indies/Caribbean are Spanish (62%), French (25%), English (15%), Dutch (5%), Haitian Creole, and the Papiamento, or Papiamentu language. This is a Portuguese-based Creole language that is spoken in the Dutch Caribbean and is the official language in Aruba, St. Maarten, Curacao, and Bonaire.

5 Tips when planning a trip to the Caribbean.

Choose the best time to visit as you don’t want to visit during hurricane season (Jun – Nov). You may also want to avoid the high season (Dec–Apr) when it's more crowded and expensive. The low season (May – Nov), is when it’s less crowded, cheaper, and there are much better deals on accommodation, etc.

Plan accommodation and local transportation in advance.

Do your research, and choose the right island based on what your preference is. Some islands have better nightlife, while others are known for their amazing beaches. If you like hiking, some islands offer amazing trails and hiking options, while others have great historical places to visit. There is something for everyone…so do your research!

Think Local!! Enjoy the local cuisine, visit local markets, attend some of the events around you, and learn about the culture.

Walk with cash in case some places don’t accept credit cards.

Best Kept Secret

Scrub Island, which is located approximately 1.5 miles off the coast of Tortola, is definitely a bucket list destination, and one most people have never heard of!!

Rumor has it that Scrub Island got its unique name from pirates, who had stopped in the area to scrub off the barnacles that had attached their boats. Fast forward to the present day, and this low key island with it’s beautiful white sand beaches, makes the perfect destination for snorkeling, hiking, getting out on a kayak and so much more!

Scrub Island is located just off the coast of Tortola, and visitors can get there via the Terrance Lettsome International Airport (EIS). Once you land on Tortola, you would also need to take a short ferry ride from Trellis Bay dock over to the island.
